This is my favorite online site for Early date Large Cents:

This was the collection of our time with every variety represented (One is a replica because the unique example is permanently impounded at ANS) and sometime in several different die states. Very educational.

As most will tell you is buy the books before the coin. With that said most of the large cent reference books are quite expensive.
I own and use Noyes, Breen, Sheldon and several of the color auction catalogs. Good luck and don't let them rule your life. I dream about the early large cents. Got the bug so to speak.

The 6 looks much lower than the op's coin. What am I missing?

After adjusting for rotation, this matches up.

Wrong OP coin. I was comparing a comp to my comp.

The opening comp is the S-81. I was wondering why the complaint about corrosion I couldn't see. LOL!

That's what I just paid for the damaged S-101, so it's about right. The higher price would be for less damaged coins. I really wouldn't be too concerned with authenticity since what I see is consistent with the authentic variety.

Thanks Marshall, I thought I was going crazy for a moment. I too think it's real unless someone had way too much time on their hands to create an electroplate and played with acid on a common variety.

I'll just repeat that I don't expect anything but insurance from authentication. They just aren't good at it.

$200 was the starting price in an auction. I think you can find a nicer lower grade for that price unless no one else bids. Obverse is fairly nice.

I just responded to an alert and didn't realize there was an earlier page. I figured you wouldn't make that mistake and was wondering if I was missing something. It turned out I was.

You do pay for the details grade, just not close to full price. Details VF30/net VG7 should sell for about the same price as a trouble free VG7.

    There is no VG7 grade...

Marshall I picked this 1796 about 1 1/2 ago for $80. I know I got a deal but they are out there.

OK G7 or VG8. The same principle applies. The net grade equates to the price of a problem free of the same grade.

Yep. That was a bargain. I could easily see that go for $200-$300.

So we aren't allowed to abbreviate dirt bag?
When you censor on what you THINK someone means, instead of what they actually are saying, it is a dangerous over stepping of your authority.
The other bag is not a curse word anyway.
How about colostomy bag? Is that OK?

Please forget the bags and the attacks. Perhaps you could post a face like :yack:or :vomit: or :stop:) next time. :D

What do you think about the authenticity of the OP's coin. I'm stumped and perhaps the reasons you believe it is a fake will get me off the fence.

As long as I can abbreviate Draped Bust - DB, I'm OK with the censor.

well the original coin is now gone. I didn't like the reverse much anyways So .. I'll be looking for others at some point.

So can we can get away from the nasties, and just not respond to posts if we don't like them?

Variety differences can be almost indistinguishable or significant depending on the particular die. The differences on the six (6) obverse dies of the 1796 Liberty caps are quite easy for the trained eye and that includes the location of the L, with differences to the Cap, to the I, distance to the dentils, orientation and alignment with dentils.
