MS 63 FH ...the coin looks very lustrous and without a few hits/scrapes could have been as high as a 65..nice coin!
The luster is very nice, but the two large hits (one on the chest and the other on the right wall) as well as the rub on the leg bother me. I was initially quite surprised it got MS-63, since I have seen better in AU-58 holders (I almost bought one, but the dealer decided it was underpriced and put it in the back and would not let me buy it). FH I agree with, but I have seen better.
And it is in an older holder so we can't even blame loosening TPG standards. I'm sure you are aware that both TPG's allow for roll friction on the leg in this series. What intrigues me, is why you would buy a coin that had something that "bothered" you. I mean, it isn't like an MS63FH SLQ is rare. Surely if you had waited longer, you could have found an example without roll friction on the leg and a better defined head.
I bought from blurry pictures that hid the problems, and I hate returning coins to dealers, so I am just going to stick with it until I get what I paid out of it.
Your story about the dealer taking back the AU coin confused me, I thought you bought this coin from the same dealer at the same time. Shouldn't be too hard to get your money back with your photos, they are pretty good. This may be a dumb question given your handle, but is this for a type coin collection or are you collecting SLQ's?
Dealer had an AU-58 FH 1917 D quarter for $235. It was nicer than this coin, but with a little more wear on the leg. I asked to buy it, then he realized it was mispriced, and would not let me buy it. He justified this by pointing to a sign saying all silver a gold coins are subject to repricing at the time of sale (supposedly for bullion). It later showed up in his case for $369. Was for a type set, but I am liquidating to fund college.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I would wait until you finish college before starting your type collection again. You obviously have a keen eye for identifying quality coins and you are going to need significant income to satisfy your own standards. For example, the type 1 SLQ, rather than deciding between an AU63 or an MS63, I have a feeling that you would be much more satisfied with an MS65FH.
Good catch. I think they may have added the large marks on the right also to take our eye away from the one on the chest.
That is kind-of what I was planning on doing. Selling off my current set (or most of it) will give me the chance to start over and use what I've learned over the past 13 years to buy quality coins the first time.
You strike me as the type who will be successful in this endeavor. Now, hurry up and get your degree so we can watch it happen.
