I just found a 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent with Reverse Design Variety#006 (The RDV-006 design first saw widespread use in the following year, 1989) . According to the CONECA website this transitional design varitey is described as "Ex. Rare". I would say that a TPG would grade as at least MS 65, maybe 66. I checked the NGC site but they don't recognize the variety as it has only recently been discovered. Does anyone know where I should turn to have this coin certified and slabbed? Also, any guess what kind of value might correspond to a coin in high mint-state that CONECA considers "Ex. Rare"?

I tried posting photos but got an error message stating that the file was too large.

It looks like CONECA teamed up with ICG.
I filled out a submission form online and plan to mail the coin to James Wiles of CONECA in the morning.
Is it normal for a man of 45 years to be so excited about finding a coin?

I just received confirmation from Dr. James Wiles of CONECA that IT IS in fact the transitional variety of which, he says, only two others have been confirmed. The coin is now on its way to ICG for grading and encapsulation. I'll follow up next month when I get it back.

I just got it back from ICG. It showed up in a MS64RD holder with the designation "CONECA Variety RDV-006 reverse style of 1989". That was a quick turnaround time.

Now the big question...What is it worth, esp. to a collector of modern Lincoln die varieties? Are you going to keep it as a memento of a great find, or sell it?

I have to keep it for a little while at least just to show to my friends and family who already think I'm on the verge of insanity for relentlesly searching through all those lowly "pennies" every weekend for the past few years.
I'll show them but they won't be the least bit impressed. Not, that is, until I do finally decide to part with it and turn that "lowly penny" into some serious cash.
    Who's the crazy one now?
What is it worth? That is a great question.
What is it worth? That is why I originally created this thread.
How much do Y'all think it's worth?
What should I use as an auction starting price or reserve price?
With less than a handful known to exist to date and being the only certified specimen and no previous history of sales on this variety I wouldn't know where to start.
Can anyone help this crazy coin collector?

That's the problem with coins like this - there's really no way to estimate value because there are not enough of them around to establish a market value.

Well, I thank you for your feedback.
    Anyone else?

People have to be aware of this variety to be interested in potentially buying it. So, the way I see it, the more publicity it gets the more likely it'll sell for more. I haven't been keeping track but has it appeared yet in any of the current publications?

    Car10,

Congratulations on a nice find! I agree with Doug when he stated "there's really no way to estimate value because there are not enough of them around to establish a market value". The Variety is too new of a find to know what kind of value could be placed on it! My advice would be to wait until the news of this new Variety has really had time to get out to the Coin Collecting Community, news of one or more of the coin's selling price has been highly publicized and a Population Report has been published on the Variety. Even after all of that, you might not have a true indication of a value but at least, there should be enough interest in the Variety, to get much more interest in and more bids on the coin when you place it up for auction!

    Good luck...Frank

Oh, I hate to ask this, but could you please post a pic of what the '89 transitional piece looks like? What are the differences between that and other years, etc? Thanks
