I swore I would never bid in an auction that refused paypal or credit cards. With that said, I did bid in JEAN VINCHON NUMISMATIQUE | Auction 31 after reading their terms which are as follows: "PAYMENT The payment of the lot will be made cash for the whole of price, costs and taxes. The purchaser will be authorized to pay by the following means : In cash : up to 1000 euros, costs and taxes included for the french citizens and people acting on behalf for a company ; up to 15000 euros, costs and taxes included for the foreign citizens on presentation of their identity card or passport. By cheque only drawn on a french bank By Bank transfer with all charge to the buyer (see bank references for the wire) By Credit Card (with an additional commission for foreign credit cards)" After I received the invoice, I told them I wanted to pay with my credit card. They responded by asking for my credit card. After sending them my credit card information they responded with this: "Hello I receive your last message but unfortunately I can use your number card for payment. As I told you, I need your card for the payment. Without your card, I can only transfer 25 euros. So please do a wire to your bank. It's the only way. Best regards" In other words, they want me to physically ship them my credit card so they can process my order or else pay with a bank transfer! The transfer will add about $60 or so to the cost. Considering the coin I bid on is 360 EUR, the extra $60 is a lot. Adding the 18% commission and 30EUR shipping, I'm really peeved. (About 510 EUR total) I'm considering telling them to either live up to their terms or retract my bid as I feel the "ship us your card" deal is fraudulent. Am I overreacting or what? Edit: The extra money isn't even the issue. The real issue is that you have no recourse what-so-ever when paying with a bank transfer!
Wait are these the same people that wanted your passport?? I don't see why they can't input your card but between that and the passport thing I'd tell them to piss off. Is it really worth the trouble? Only problem I could see is if your using one of those Visa debit cards some machines don't let you input those manually.
@Nemo I do not feel that you are overreacting at all. I would never send my physical card to anyone for any reason. I feel that their terms were deceptive, and that it is very unfair to force you to pay the transfer fees. It sounds like you can either cancel the transaction and forego the coin or pay their ransom. I am sorry that you are in this position but this is why I always only bid when PayPal or credit cards are easily accepted.
No your not overreacting, no way would I send my credit card anywhere, they would be the only organization that I have heard of that needs the physical card, only my opinion but I would say to them to work out how to except the card number or I would not go ahead with the sale.
I'm sure it must be a misunderstanding due to the language barrier. I simply cant see where anyone would want or need your physical card. You should contact them again to get more information.
Really???????? That would be more than foolish to send your credit card to anyone. Like @Ken Dorney said, it must be a misunderstanding.
I wish it was a mistake. Here are a couple of the emails. I had asked if they could just send the coin registered mail and they said they could do that for 20EUR instead of 30. I also told them to remove the VAT since the coin is being shipped to the US. From me: "Dear Thomas, I have never been asked to provide my passport in hundreds of European auction transactions. Since you are shipping to the USA, I don't understand why more paperwork is needed. If you can't do that, than just reduce the shipping to 20EUR as was mentioned was possible in a previous email, it works out to be about the same. Also, I would like to pay with a credit card. Thank you" The response: "I can't use your card number without your card in my terminal. For the payment, the best is a wire. I can't reduice the shipping cost. The copy of your passport is just for me to prove that you are a US citizen. Best regards, Thomas"
Then: "Hello Please send mr your credit card for payment. It not please make a bank transfer Best regards" This is no mistake!
Then finally, AFTER I sent my credit card number: "Hello I receive your last message but unfortunately I can use your number card for payment. As I told you, I need your card for the payment. Without your card, I can only transfer 25 euros. So please do a wire to your bank. It's the only way. Best regards"
Well, they can't expect to be in business for much longer - competing in a cramped 21st century marketplace with companies that don't make it so difficult to give them money. Really, there are lots of coins and lots of dealers. Why bother with these people?
Given that, sounds like time to retract offer. I've done a bank transfer once, but it was to a dealer with whom I had more trust.
Hehehehe that's about it. I really want this coin but I think I'll regret sending these jokers the cash.
All these threads regarding these darn auction sites. Makes me glad I stick to ebay. Could care less what I miss out on. At least I dont have to deal with things like this, buyers fees & whatever else many of these lug heads come up with.
jokers is right! sounds like a flybynight company anyway. i wouldn't have sent a copy of my passport IF i had one! tell them to hand deliver it if they want cash...and "cash?!? american $$?? what good is that in France??
i'm wiff ya Mat, i can't imagine and i'd have an artichoke on that or them extending an auction a week. lol...
