The commission took two steps toward issuing a set of four curved coins in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon. The set will consist of a gold $5 coin, a silver dollar, a copper-nickel clad half dollar and a Proof 5-ounce silver dollar, the first such commemorative coin of that weight.

The law authorizing those coins requires that all four share a common reverse that is based on a photograph taken of Astronaut Buzz Aldrin on the moon. The photo shows a reflection in the mirror visor Aldrin wore. It shows the lunar lander, an American flag and astronaut Neil Armstrong.

So concave/convex coins are to be the next fad, then.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. Part of me says, "yeah, OK, whatever", and the other part of me says, "meh, those will look really stupid in slabs and such".

To each his own. I suppose I can understand the novelty.

And of course the sets will either be limited mintage or maxed out. So either way the set will end up first over inflated then the bottom will fall out . No thanks more granny bait from the mint.

Nope. Not unless someone put a hole in it and carved it into a hobo piece.

The hat used to be only pre-1900 holey gold.

Nowadays it is only holed or looped love tokens and engraved pieces.

Aye, but I don't find the design itself objectionable.

Cartoonist if you ask me....if other word mints can come up with new designs that are pleasing to the eye why can't the U.S.?

    I'm not a cartoonist. ;)

    I think
I'm pretty sure this was already agree'd on because it's required on the rules by the U.S Mint for their commission for a reverse design and requirements with accord for Public Law 114-282, the reverse is not part of the contest. I honestly think its a wonderful idea to make it curved with the image of the helmet but I hope it will not end up like the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Dollars and just be ugly.

It gets worse... it's concave like the baseball HOF thing...

Didn't like it at first.. but then I realized it is supposed to be a reflection on a helmet's facemask. If they showed more of the helmet, it could work. Since you really can't tell it's supposed to be a helmet, it just looks weird.

The article explains that this view was one of the requirements - and the three designs shown on that page all comply with it. The one depicted in the first post here has a much bigger US flag than the actual photo, while the other two designs look a little more like that photo. ;)

IMO, the lander does look weird. At least there haven't placed a headband of oversized stars on the astronaut. (YET) :wideyed:

I am familiar with the image. It's just that this design looks like an arcade token.

Interesting design, I think I kind of like it. The one on the article that really grinds my gears is the 2019 Native American dollar reverse with the computer-like syntax for the mathematical formula. I'd be peeved if they put "pi" instead of "π" on the finalized design.
