So I've had this little coin in my junk box for over 10 years thinking I'd ID it one day. I guess that day is today. Sorry for the mediocre photos. They are all of the same coin. It’s small; about 18 x 16 mm. It's a Roman provincial, methinks. The only bit of the obverse legend I can make out is a gamma and a K at about 9 o'clock. I'm guessing that the gamma could be just the -G of AUG, which may not help much. Caracalla perhaps? Reverse holds a bit more promise. Not unlike grape reverses from Nikopolis ad Istrum. If my life depended on it right now, I’d say a Caracalla from Nikopolis ad Istrum, but that’s just an educated guess. What do others see?
Nikopolis looks like the best bet (I see Abila used a similar reverse type, but the legend doesn't fit). Looks like a long-bearded portrait to me, though... most suggestive of Marcus Aurelius or Lucius Verus. Or Sept Sev?
When I revisited the coin, the hairstyle to me suggested that the die engraver was going for curls, and my first thought was Marcus Aurelius. But a quick VCoins search didn't turn up a grapes reverse type for him. But what I know about provincials you could put in a thimble and shake.
94% sure. KO inscription above head was the give-away. I have 4 small AE's of Commodus from Philippopolis, all with very different looking busts, but here he has grapes for a beard!
