German East African 1916T 15 Rupien.

Antidote, the 15 Rupien from German East Africa is also known as the 'Tabora Sovereign',not only because of its size, but because it was struck at an emergency mint (along with 20 Heller coins) at Tabora, which is located in north-central Tanganyika.

The Tabora Mint coins are of historic significance,as they are associated with Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck,as are the common 1 Rupie notes of the 1916 issue.

My (current) favourite foreign coin is the US `Oregon Trail' half dollar, issued for years 1926,28,33,34,36,39 and 1939. Here's a couple of examples.

Roy, that coin actually went for a record of 130,000+USD. You can most certainly buy a house in some countries. The next time if it ever comes back onto the market, you know it's not going to be any cheaper than that.

France really does have some beautifully designed coins.

I'd go with either this one from South Africa or a
100 Lire from Italy (which looked a lot nicer before the size reduction).

Here's one of my favorites as far as beauty is concerned. A sterling 50mm 1973 Bahamian Independence proof. Love the ship.

The Bahamas contract out coin minting, correct?

I believe so, as I have a number of proofs from the bahamas, and they're mostly Franklin Mint. Here's another example...

Wow, they are stunning. Nothing like that in my collection. I can afford gold at this time. :(

Sekhmet, I found this coin about a month or two ago and was in a bidding war to win it, unfortunately the price escalated out of my range and I think over it's normal value also. Also, I have a feeling it was 10 Zlotych? Though that could be wrong...

I will obtain one one day I am sure...

Also, has anyone seen the Netherlands Gilder coins with the young Wilhelmina head (19th C) - very cute also...

I wouldn't mind a 10z of that linked design, myself.. hopefully we don't end up battling over the same one someday

I was going to say Franklin Mint but didn't want to insult you if I was wrong. I think they made this 20 Balboa "conquistador holding sword aloft" that I have here. Obviously I like the design..

I really like the head of Marianne/Ceres design on the 20 Franc gold coin (circa 1904), which I believe I've seen as someone's avatar here lately. Anyone know the best place to buy a no-BS uncirculated example?

The 1904 design is this one -

    - is that the one you mean ? It's commonly known as the Rooster because of the reverse. As for where to buy one - would you like it raw or slabbed ?

I always loved that design myself. But of all the Marianne designs, this one will forever be my favorite.

That's the one. Calling that coin the "rooster" is like referring to
Catherine Zeta-Jones by the brandname of her shoes. I'll never do it!

I'd prefer a slabbed example- though these seem to be treated as bullion by most of the market?

I like the other design as well, hadn't seen that yet..

    Gros Tournois

I like this French Gros Tournois of Louis IX, struck 1266-1270 at Tours. Great medieval coin.

Then contact Clark Smith - he'll be able to fix you up ;) And yes, they are treated as bullion for the most part. But gems can be found for a small premium.

That is an 1848 10 centime essai - you don't see very many of them.
