I agree. I am getting old copper (1/2 cents, cents and 2 cents) and nickel 3 and 5 cents very reasonably in all conditions, because there is not any
silver or gold content. My local shops are offering the coins below their cost, because the majority of collectors want precious metals.

Not quite 30, more like just shy of 20. The mid to late 90's you couldn't GIVE AWAY precious metals. Everybody in the bullion universe keeps seeing inflation that isn't there. Eventually they have to fold to facts, don't they? Or are PM's now objects of worship in their own right?

We're getting off topic. I've heard Rick state that "you should buy more than one coin (whatever he's hawking), buy at least one for each of your children, put them away they will be worth a lot more in the future."

Ironically, I've received a survey from him in today's e-mail and I've never bought anything from his show.

Kurt, I've written several "viewpoints" for David Harper myself.

I guess it depends on how long he expects one to hold the piece. If he's hawking really nice cameo proofs and the time horizon is enough, yeah, he's probably right, IF you can get in at a reasonable price, and IF the coin doesn't degrade in the plastic (Sorry, I've seen it - it happens). I bought R.T.'s cameo proof book back in the 90's, bought a few, had a few more slabbed, and they have ALL gone up in catalog value, regardless which catalog one uses. I'm using NGC's catalog, and most of my cameo proofs have increased over 100%, on paper. Or should I say, in pixels.

Does that mean they have to keep going up? Oh heck no.

Mike's right - demand is king. What drives demand? Hucksterism, unfortunately.

I have Cameo Proof Franklin halves also. I didn't buy them from Rick, I bought them at a more reasonable price and have had a greater appreciation than if I had paid Rick's prices. I also have a set of Proof silver Kennedy half dollars that's tied for second place in the PCGS Set Registry, I didn't buy any of those coins from Rick either.

He owns or is partners with R&I Coins, that doesn't have the overhead of the TV Show and his prices are still above the prices of other coin dealers. I've come to the conclusion that he gears his sales to two types of collectors: those who don't know better or those who have enough money that if he is selling something they want they order it regardless of the cost.

Yup, at one point in the mid-90's, he was marketing to the collector who wanted the best cameos and DC's. That has morphed into what you described accurately above. Initially, his "wheelhouse" only included 1964 proofs and 1965SMS through 1970 proof Kennedys, nothing newer. Maybe he has expanded into later Kennedys now? I don't know, I never run into his programming or ads.

R&I way predates any TV involvement by Rick.

Kurt, this is where you and I are not on the same page. The phenomenon I am referring to is the lackluster performance of Nickel 3 Cent pieces. It's been going on for LONGER than 30 years. your PM correlary has a shorter shelf-life, but I am not sure if it has any effect on the coins I have mentioned.

I remember seeing ads for R&I in Coin World. Don't recall seeing them for a year or so. Silver Kennedys (except maybe 2012) from 1992 to present aren't all that rare. It's the 1964 that's the killer. I have a PR69 Cameo, the highest graded is a PR69 Deep Cameo and they just aren't out there. The 1865 SMS Kennedy, in high grade is tough to find because of poor government packaging. I just won a MS68 one on eBay from OCRC Coins out of CA. The hologram was badly damaged, a dealer had placed their label over it and when it was removed, it damaged the hologram under it. OCRC offered to re-holder the coin for me at no charge, he even e-mailed me a pre-paid label to send it back to him. Can you seen Rick doing that?

Hardly. :D What does PCGS charge for a reholder job? I'm bringing some NGC reholders and some PCGS to NGC crossovers with me to Denver. I REALLY dislike the PCGS holder.

I remember Rick T. has his own little sticker (like CAC) for the ones with exceptional cameo.

I swear I'm gonna make a sticker. Maybe a moose. Think GEICO would object?

but unfortunately, the market doesn't care about Rick's sticker, and it doesn't affect value like a CAC sticker does.

Truthfully, I don't need a sticker to tell me a coin has exceptional cameo contrast, all I need is working eyeballs.

Let us not forget his "Everest" sticker, which in my opinion means "overpriced.":)

The outcomes are NOT pre-determined. Ask Charmy Harker (The Penny Lady) she has appeared on the show.

and yes, blissskr, it's funny. I didn't even catch it until I read it for the 3rd time.

I really like this forum, and can't wait to read about the other on TV coin shows from you.

I never heard of an Everest sticker. Is it literally mountain-shaped? I'm liking my moose idea more by the day.

I'm with you. R.T. is so into himself it's ridiculous. At least a moose sticker makes sense. (basically means superior) so... let's make it happen. :)

It's a shame. His 1950-1970 Cameo Proof book is a beautifully done and photographed book.
