I'm not sure if I have posted this one but I got it back from Justin and from CAC. I bought the coin for $4 from a shop used my NGC coupon and sent it in hoping for a 66+ never thinking 67 and than paid to send it to CAC just for fun to see if it would sticker so maybe it might compete with a PCGS coin if I ever sell it.
So, they can assign a grade to a heads/heads Nickel, but not to this Ike? The nickel had less detail and graded MS!!!
I've posted this before, but for those that didn't see it: If you dip a blue hazed Eisenhower Dollar in acetone, it will remove the haze. Keep in mind, acetone doesn't react with the metal, just the haze. I've submitted coins I've cleaned with acetone to TPGS and they have graded them normally without any comment about the acetone. Just remember to rinse the coin in distilled water and pat them dry with a micro fiber cloth.
I know right. That was my very first question but grade doesn't really matter with something like this anyway. Maybe it was a space issue?
All I can tell you is it worked for me and being inactive with metal, acetone is safe to use on coins. A little MS70 afterwards will give it luster.
I got my Acetone at Walmart. Maybe I should try Home Depot next time. Anyways, glad it worked for you. I can't stand the blue haze or any kind of blue at all.
hold the phone... you used acetone because you didn't want to affect the metal, but then you recommend using MS-70 to give it luster???
If you're going to try to not affect the metal, I get it. Acetone is inert to the metal, but the MS-70 is not. Also interesting to note is that the directions to MS-70 tell you to rub the MS-70 across the surface of the coin. this direction is reason enough for me to not use MS-70. rubbing across the surface will affect the coin, and doing so with an acid is asking for trouble.
No, it won't "give a coin luster" only the strike does that. However it can remove haze toning gunk etc that will reveal luster
