Hi, I recently picked up this coin close to melt, as its a better date, but upon further inspection I noticed cracks and pieces all over the coin. I was just wondering, is this a mint error, or just damage? Thanks, Peter Z
A soak in pure acetone would surely, tell the story, I agree, I see some yellowing on the surface. You can take a rose thorn and gently nudge the edge of the "crack". If it moves or even slightly chips, then Eddie is correct.
Hi, I nudged the crack, as well as soaked it in pure acetone, but the coin looks exactly the same. Thanks
With this look, I'd start the acetone operation with at least 24 hours' continuous soak and more likely 48. Chances are it would take a few such soaks to start seeing results.
The glue is very stubborn. That is to say, if that's what it is. I've had a heck of a time with it on several coins. Acetone won't budge it. You almost have to chisel it off. Is it raised off the surface any? If it is, you're still in business. If it isn't, that should at least cinch it isn't glue.
