Several years ago I made the near fatal mistake of saying "Unlike women coins don't lose their beauty over time" The wrong ears ( son-in-laws mother) overheard the comment.
It's near-impossible to anticipate what will come up for sale in the next auctions so I tend to just end up buying what jumps out. That said, I do have a lengthy wantlist which represents what I would ideally like to acquire to "complete" my collection. Realistically, this will probably take a couple decades to complete, so I'm taking the "slow and steady" approach.
Not many people here listing Greek items on their want lists. I am sure there are Greek issues people are seeking. I agree with those who said they buy what is available when it is available (or I have ended up regretting it for years afterwards). I am still kicking myself over missing a Syracuse tetradrachm I should have bought a few months ago. I don't participate in auctions outside the US and almost never buy any coins that are outside the US due to all the import restrictions and headaches involved. I know that is very limiting. I am starting to branch out into the (very interesting) Hellenistic series because the classical Greek coins I want that I don't have are getting so pricey.
You are reading the wrong posts. Many of us like Greek but wants tend to be more topical or general (animals or archaics with incuse reverses) rather than by catalog number. The interesting feature of Greek is how many cities issued relatively cheap bronzes and minor silver. We hear all the time about how expensive it is to buy Greek tetradrachms and so many will only consider those. Too bad.
I completely agree with Doug's statement, and I've made similar statements in the past. For my collecting style, the best approach is to buy opportunistically. I have an idea in my head of areas where my collection is generally weak (RR didrachms, early denarii with symbols, imperatorial portraits, early struck bronzes) and I buy quality coins in those areas when the opportunity arises. However, I try not to concede quality just to buy from these high-need areas. If there are better-quality coins available in low-need areas, I will buy those instead. Next week, the availability may be reversed. Buying ancient coins from fixed lists encourages concessions, and I've generally regretted the few times I've bought coins with that mindset. Having said all that, my RR list includes: 1. Republican Didrachms; 2. Quadrigati of various issues; 3. Early struck bronzes; 4. Early denarii with symbols; 5. Imperatorial portrait denarii, including J.C.
I was referring to the replies in this thread. The replies in this thread are mostly about Roman issues, which is fine, I like Roman coins as well. I have many Greek bronzes and minor silver issues and love them but the stars of the Greek series to me are the staters and tetradrachms.
My list is long and spans the ages but high-grade examples of both a Lima Half Crown and Legionary Denarius are right near the top.
I pulled the trigger yesterday on a Severus II follis which is pretty good. Fair price, too. So now I only need Maxentius to round out the portraiture of the tetrarchy.
I have a few coins on a short list. I'd like a bee Tet. I'd really like a quality turtle stater like Doug Smith's & a quality dolphin stater like Stevex6. That being said, I'm going to a coin show this weekend & will see if any coins speak to me in person.
Well said.... Esp. when like myself, I collect all periods in history. My wantlist is always LONG, unfortunately the funds are always LOW. Since I buy all my material from auctions, I find one has to choose, what one can afford. However, I have many times, when I had my heart set on a coin, then only to be outbid. But, there are so many auctions, with tons of neat coins I just got a beautifull AV 1808-TH 8 Escudos from Ferdinand VII/ Mexico City Mint/ 27.08g./ 35mm. from Jesus Herrero in SC= mintstate.
I'm always looking for Hadrian travel series coins. I really want to grab a nice Nilus and Alexandria denarius.
LOL, DUDE! You have posted many coins that I have been wanting. So my list is sometimes as "Yeah, some of those cool coins Mikey has..."

Well after my recent purchases (mainly of Greek tets), I'm probably going to have to take a little rest and watch you guys post your fabulous purchases. However, I would dearly love to get a JC portrait denarius or a Saladin dinar sometime in the future. In Moderns I would like to get a Canada 1908 sovereign as it will leave me with only the most pricey, desirable and RARE coin in that series to complete my set. Not sure if I can afford that but am on the lookout for a bank with low security arrangements in place....
While that is not a common coin, the seller bought it in Jan 2016 and wants to make a 30% profit. Scottish coins are always sought after and since he is listing it as a BiN, he probably won't get too much interest. Make him an offer he cannot refuse..... https://coins.ha.com/itm/scotland/w...45-35218.s?ic4=OtherResults-SampleItem-071515#
