I got my 2007 US Silver Proof Coin set on Saturday. As expected, there were imperfections. Several of the dollar coins have specks on the mirror finish, which is annoying. The John Adams Dollar has a piece of hair on the frosted image. One of the state quarters has a huge mark on the mirror surface, too, left of the salmon. Unfortunately, at such a large cost, I have no choice but to return the sets. I was not surprised. Dust particles are often seen on the surfaces of the US Proof Sets. Why doesn't the Mint use blowers so that no dust gets trapped when the plastic is sealed? Now, I'll have to wait many weeks for a replacement and who knows how good those will be? I do like the case for the Presidential Dollars. I hope you guys have better luck with your sets.
Proof Set No. The plastic cases are the only things that are perfect. There is no cracks at all in any of the cases, not even on the reverse side. The problem is that dust and hair particles are on the coins and there's no way to remove these without breaking open the case. Are you returning the sets as I am? The Mint still hasn't learned to use dust-free environments before sealing the cases.
My theory is some of the dust you see inside proof sets happens after packaging. Residue from the die cut coin holders and spacer inside that works it way loose in shipping. I have not ordered my silver proof sets yet but was disappointed with the quality of the presidential dollars in the regular sets.
I recieved mine also and am disappointed with the quality. The Lincoln Cent in my set is spotted on the obverse. The rest of the coins in the set are great.
Just got mine today. The look awesome. except for the Jefferson dollar has discoloration on his face. Can you just send the Presidential coins back? Kinda wish I didnt subscribe to both presidential set and silver proof set b/c of getting presidential coins twice. Too bad the didn't package them a littel different. I might just cancel my subscription to the Presidential set.
I looked through mine briefly now that they finally arrived......I need to go relook and see if I had a DDO washington lol Did anyone else notice a strange bright square at the ase of kennedy's neck? 4 of my 6 silver proof sets had that oen lieelte square of brightness there....thought it was a little odd
I received 5 silver proof sets. 2 of them had 2 sets of the silver quarters, but did not contain the set of cent, nickel, dime, half and Saq. That seems to work out OK. I just ordered another 2 sets to ensire I have 5 complete sets.
I got 2 silver and 2 clad. The only problem with any of the coins id that one of the Washington dollars has a scratch. I blew it off because I'd have to send the entire set back and I KNOW the one they send me will have bigger problems.
I got mine too, some imperfections on the Sacagewea Dollar and the Washington dollar. Otherwise PR70 coins. I was pleasantly surprised given what the circulation strikes have looked like!
Got mine, now I feel like I need to go look at 'em but I'm afraid to look. Don't look Ethel... dang. What I didn't get was that 'cheezy' label on the proof Clad box. Like, there was an error on the box or something so they printed the label & put it on top rather than printing the outer boxes correctly. Yeah, I know, it's all about the coins but I wonder what goes on w/the packaging sometimes.
What I ended up doing was identical to just sending it back, but I got to choose what I wanted. I have a subscription for four, and also ordered six separately (total of ten sets). I only want to keep four (from the subscription). So I look through ten, keep four sets, and send the remaining six back on my second order, and end up happy with the sets I kept. (As I understand it, returned ordered are all or nothing, so I'd need two orders anyhow. Could be wrong, though...)
I had a problem with my Presidential set that came with my silver set. I sent back just the Presidentials, and got them right back from the mint becasue I didn't return the entire order. Now, why I would have to send back a perfectly good set of silvers to replace the Presidents is beyond me, but if your going to return something, send back the whole order.
Is the Mint really sending out a high percentage of defective sets, or are collectors just getting more particular about the quality? There seem to be a lot of unhappy customers around here.
I'm not that picky at all, but a red "mole" on John Adams' face should have been caught before it went out the door. But I'm stuck with it now because I didn't send back the perfectly good silver set with it and my window of opportunity has closed. No biggie though, I have another good Presidential set as my keeper..
I don't think I'm getting any "pickier" than I have ever been. This is the first year I have returned almost every proof set I've received. The sets that do not contain the presidential dollars, (the proof quarters sets, both clad and silver) were fine. The full set of clad and silver (which contain the presidential dollars ) and the (stand alone) presidential dollar proof sets have all been returned at least once. I'm not talking about a little noticeable imperfection either. The presidential dollars have been at the very least scratched, hazed, speckled or scuffed. Several have looked like they've got some sort of horrible looking crust on them. The way the mint advertises their proof products it's "solely for the collector", then to the laymans eyes they should be perfect, anything less is not acceptable. I.M.H.O. As collectors we all know that condition is everything.
