By giving Liberty racially distinctive features, instead of staying with a figure that doesn't have any?
I think most people didn't like the gigantic stars on her head as it detracted from the design. Some also didn't like the cut off tail feathers of the eagle on the reverse.
It was on my immediate buy list until I saw the design .. those stars detracted from the visual aspect of it. So the coin is now on my "buy later when it's closer to spot" list. I buy mostly Eagle designs on coins. So I have most US coins that have an eagle design or up to a point (pre 1800s are kinda expensive). So for me the obverse doesn't matter as much except those gigantic stars, if they were smaller and well balanced with the head it would have been much better IMHO LOL
Can you tell me why you think more people don't like the design..I think the price of $60.00 is way to high....I am feeling to leave alone......TY
See the replies above your post. In summary, the stars being too large and the Eagle's tail feathers are two main parts that many don't like.
I was going to be in for a few but I just can't do it with the price being so high. If they were priced similar to last years or a few dollars more I would've still been a buyer, but at almost 2x last years price is just too high for me. I'm hoping maybe the mint comes to their senses with the 4 coin set but something tells me that they won't and that will be priced prohibitively expensive for what it is as well. Anyone wanting one and not minding the wait will probably be able to buy one of these below mint issue price within a few months like most other mint products these days.
I was able to get both of the Silver medal's last year, and they look really nice to me. This years choice for the Silver medal's design looks as though everyone at the mint that had a hand in producing it, put their initials on it. I normally don't mind the premiums for coins that I like, but when those premiums are unreasonable, and the design of the product in not appealing to me, I'll stay away, and buy something else that I want. I have a tendency to agree though with so many of the above posts, and say that this years choice of design, will not meet expectations.
Ordered 2 as I have no problem at all with the design. The price? That's a different story which, had it been $34.95, would have had me ordering 5.
Oh I forgot .. noon ... maybe later. Oddly, they are already on eBay for $80 to $180 and more in OGP.
Does anyone know if the Mint director/administrators, the Treasury Secretary's personnel or legislation determines the price of the product? I know I avoided getting the gold because I thought that a premium of over $400 is well beyond unreasonable. However, sometimes when a product isn't popular, it becomes very valuable right after it's no longer offered. (Remember BU versions of Jackie Robinson $5, Smithsonian $5 and Civil War $5 gold coins) Of course, those coins had slow sales mainly due to the Mint cranking out too many products (Commems) for collectors to keep up with. Too bad the 2017 Silver medals have no mintage limit and a huge price increase.
The Mint publishes a list of selling prices for gold coins at various gold spot prices. This is how the sales price is determined. Who set these prices? I don't know, but they published it several years ago (maybe 2007) when gold was so volatile that month to month changes necessitated a fluid price structure.
Is the Mint's motto "Disappoint numismatists and harvest as much of their money as quickly as possible"?
