New Hadrain Denarius with an odd flan shape: HADRIAN AR Denarius, Rome mint IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG. Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder. PM TR P COS DES II. Concordia seated left, holding patera and resting arm on Spes: cornucopia below chair. CONCORD in exe. RIC 17, BMC 36, RSC 251a 2.78g. 20mm Post anything Hadrian or an odd flan
Usually Hadrians seem well done. I only have one with ragged edges. However the Rome mint of Septimius Severus went through a period when it was the rule rather than the exception. I would think not everyone would have the steady hand to make a good pourer of flans. In the last years of the 190's, no one on the staff seemed to have the knack...or care???
Guitar-pick-shaped flan on this Hadrian. The reason your flan has that shape, @Evan8 , is that the flans were cast in molds and the outcroppings were where the sprue or "runner" was trimmed away. See the discussion here about flan preparation.
It was the portrait that caught my eye and then the flan shape sealed the deal for me. The portrait looks "realistic" I guess is how I could describe it.
Has anyone ever recieved a coin in the mail taped to a piece of aluminum foil? This Hadrian came from a dealer in Ukraine. The foil used to maybe disguise the coin from x-ray scanners in customs? Just kinda curious that's all.
I've always found the oval shape of this one to be very pleasing. Perfectly round coins are for squares .
