Thinking about making a ring with my favorite coin

My wife wears this I guess maybe 4-5 times a year at the most, pretty much never against her skin, so the very real danger you warn against won't come into play. It's an excellent point though; not only does the manufacture need care, subsequent use needs care as well.

Well, I gotta admit, I deplore the idea of mutilating any good collectible coin. Some modern, basically worthless coin like a zinkoln cent, OK, use it for a washer or spacer. I saw a nice wooden outrigger canoe in Sri Lanka some years ago which was riveted together using local brass or bronze holed coins as washers. It looked real strong and was lasting well in the salt water environment.

As one member said earlier, its yours so so as you want with it. I somehow think HBrider already knew in his heart that it would be sacrilege to make jewelry from such a fine ancient coin, and perhaps tossed out the question to hear us squeal. Why not get one of the new fakes, like a Greek coin, and make a ring from it?

There are a finite number of ancient coins.
They are no longer being minted today.
Therefore I believe only in actions which are consistent with preservation. I thought this was inherent in the practice of collecting coins. We store our coins in a manner most conducive to long term preservation.
Collectors of modern coins would cringe at the thought of touching the surface of a proof coin.
Yet creating jewellery from ancient coins and exposing it to wear is acceptable?

If you feel that you really must do it
have a wax casting made then have it cast in silver
a good silversmith no big deal theres your coin
I don't think it would even cost much

Judging from your posts, it appears you spend most of your time in the US forums. There are many more jerks on that side of the site. I have noticed the same thing on Facebook and at coin shows. I don’t know why, but I find that collectors of ancients are far friendlier than collectors of US coins. It might have something to do with collecting history vs collecting commodities.

With 3D scanning and 3D printing so high quality and affordable, and most jewelers using a combination of the 2 now anyways to make their master, there is no reason a decent jeweler couldn’t scan the coin and put it into the ring via the CAD file and 3D output a beautiful ring like the example the OP posted. That way the coin is still “your coin” but you get he best of both worlds.

This is a more high tech version of the wax impression suggestion another poster made.

Hbrider, I wouldn't let some of the crude & stupid remarks from a group of pretentious, supercilious elitists dissuade you from doing what you want with your coin. People have been making coin jewelry for thousands of years & that will never change. If your coin was a great rarity or very valuable I would discourage you mounting it into jewelry, however, your coin is neither of these. The size of your coin is ideal for a ring mount & the image of Heracles is very artistic. Have your ring made & ignore all the taradiddle.

Would it not be easier and cheaper to just make a casting? The ring would just be to show off to mostly non-collectors. Plus 3-D printing metal to any respectable degree of accuracy is extremely expensive to do, plus the equipment costs tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I make rings with Ancient coins/artifacts, and enjoy wearing them! I even enjoy them more that this Toned Attica in my coin case! owl.jpg front.jpg front.jpg

To me they are preserved for all time and can be appreciated without being hidden away slabbed in some box.

Don't get me wrong some coins should be left the way they are!

I feel opinions on your question can be constructive without comments like "making gloves out of your cat" Come on lol IMG_4472.JPG IMG_4405.JPG !!!!

That’s not really the case anymore. The ring wouldn’t be printed. A lot of jewelers use CAD to design rings and then print them in a high fidelity jewelers wax, which they use for casting.

It’s nowhere near as expensive as it was even 3 years ago!

What I was referring to was printing the coin itself out of metal. THAT is expensive and difficult. Printing it out of wax for use in CASTING (like I said above) is easy to do.

    Your post was very ambiguous
