Great coin Panzerman. Thanks for posting it.

The Moghul empire had started its decline after Aurangzeb who had brought most of the sub-continent under his rule. However, none of his successors could maintain that control.

This is one of my other Mohurs......Aurangzeb AH 1080, year 12 of reign (1669) also MS65

Hahaha. Well the script is never fully stamped on any coin so it's difficult to read. But on the obverse it gives the rulers name and states the denomination. In the case of my coin it says Aurangzeb, Mohit. On the reverse it says Year of reign and Sholapur mint. This is in addition to a lot of stuff that is not clearly legible:happy:

    Any additional information is welcome.

Thanks Panzerman. This is one of my favourites. Shah Jahan (of Taj Mahal fame) 1628-9. I think quite well centred for that time, if a little weak strike in the centre.

    I agree!
    Very nice:happy:....example!
Here is my example, it was one of my first coin buys....
I think its 1630 from Surat Mint. My data label shows incorrect date at time. It seems in perfect quality. I can just imagine holding a 1000 Mohur coin=35 pounds GOLD. john photos 1 025 (Medium).jpg

    These are beautiful.

Normally coins without significant pictorial elements to the design do not appeal as much to me, but the calligraphy on Islamic, Near Eastern, and central Asian coins can often have a beauty of its own, particularly when struck in gold.

I intend to purchase a Qajar dynasty Persian gold toman one of these days, but have one or two specific dates in mind.

That is a beauty @panzerman. Appears to be year 2 of his reign , same as mine. Both Surat mint, probably part of the Akola hoard.

This "Akola Hoard" mention intrigued me, so I Googled it.

Didn't go very deep into the search results, but did see a brief mention in this coin listing.
    Now that's really fascinating.

Would be really nice if someone discovered a hoard of Jahangir Zodiac Mohurs, all in mint state.....then even I could afford the complete set;)!
