Hello folks! So I'm crossing over into this new area for me and wanted to get some insight before I squeeze on any ancient coin purchases. I'm coming from the US coin and currency realm so my experience with ancient coins is less than zilch. I've become interested in Roman coins and also some Templar coins I've been finding on eBay. For the Romans are there any threads on here or sites you'd recommend to get myself better aquainted before I spend any money? Also for the Templar coins all I seem to be finding are Spanish Templar coins...are there any others out there and do any collectors here dabble or specialize in these types? I found a neat Agnus Dei copper on the bay a couple weeks ago, but it was sold before I could learn enough about it to make a decision. So learn I shall before I feel like I missed out on something else again. Thanks to all in advance!

The Knights Templar I love the history. But I can't help you with coinage. Surely someone here with mideval coin knowledge will jump in.
My best advice for both Templar and Romans is books and more books, also take advantage of online resources.
Seer and Sealby are 2 authors that come to mind right off hand.

Thanks @Smojo I'll google them and see what I can find. The history behind the Knights Templar is what has me wanting to collect their coins. Not so much for the history of the coinage itself, but I collect coins so it would suit me more than armor. And the Roman Empire is something that's always fascinated me.

I have a few Malta Order of Knights that are related to Knights Templar (descendants, etc.)

No expert here, just have them for the cool History...

i've long wanted to get a Templar denar with the double riders.. it is a good line of coinage to collect, they are however scarce and expensive for the most part. i've collected several coins from the crusades, but still no Templars.

While I'm no authority on the coinage of the Crusader states, I'm fairly certain that the Knights Templar never mined coins. Most of what you see claiming to be a Templar coin is misatributed. @FitzNigel would be able to give a much better answer.

The Knights Hospitaller started minting coins once they were in possession of Rhodes in the early 1300s, many of which are quite beautiful and quite expensive. The other crusader order to mint coins, to my knowledge, was the Teutonic Knights.

that sounds correct, my mind couldn't recall ever hearing of the KT's making their own coinage. but i know that those type coins exist.(double riders)

I appreciate the confidence, but I don't recall ever seeing Knights Templar coins, hence I didn't respond. I can't say I know!

You might consider getting a coin of Philip IV of France, who suppressed the Templars and burnt their last Grand Master at the stake. His coins are readily available.

Hmmm...the Phillip IV is a good idea. I might grab one of these to go with my Louis IX

@Orfew and @Alegandron... you guys are my kindred spirits in collecting. :) I had both of you in mind when I wrote that, and also for my next main post. (Tomorrow?)

    Bookmarked! Thank you.

I've seen pictures of those, but not in any auctions. They would be pretty nice to stumble upon at a fair price.

That's pretty interesting. I'll have to read more on the Hospitaller and Teutonic. I have only seen the Templar it the coin titles, but it is eBay so who knows if it is valid or not. They also tag them "Masonic" and my guess was that was just to draw views.

See Louis IX I would be interested in. Philip IV was less then fair IMHO. I have no respect for a man that gets out of debt by killing his creditor. (I will admit I had to wiki that to brush up on the end of the knights:pompous:)

LOL, I dunno... you have NEVER dreamed about your Bank / Lending Institution being COMPLETELY destroyed, so that any and ALL of your credit cards, loans, mortgages, ALL DEBT, etc. were completely wiped out? :D

If he had not wiped out the Templars, we would have a dull, mundane International Bank of the Templars today. However, their being killed off has created an enormous amount of cool CONSPIRACY THEORIES, mysteries, TV Documentaries, Alien incursions, etc. to delight the masses. :D
