I've got a decently large excel sheet for both my haves and spares. I'm trying to decide if I want to up the ante and use software or numista. Perhaps down the road, I'll look into it. Thanks.
I have found a few interesting world coins just by going through the world coin bins at my LCS. A 1947 una peseta (56) the coin is supposed to be fairly rare, and a few key date Mexican and German coins. Discoveries like that are very few and far between, but I do get to have fun looking up then sorting out the others. History lessons and exposure to other currency has been enjoyable
I have a spreadsheet for all my collectible coins, but not for all these mixed world coins bought in lots. That would be a lot of trouble and would not let me easily locate missing coins. Nice thing about Numista appears to be its ability to set up swaps with other people. It automatically tracks what you have and what you want. Ultimately I think I may use this feature but will probably put a few thousand coins in there first.
That's the problem I have. I don't feel like putting in a few thousand duplicates that I already have. I wish they had a way to upload an excel sheet with all the information already filled out. I usually just trade with folks from my online coin clubs/forums by sending my excess list. I like the idea of numista though.
I have been buying bulk lots for a few years now. The good lots are definitely getting harder to find, and when you do find them, the prices are not what they used to be. The lots I look for are a little more focused than back in the day when I once bought 119 pounds of world coins in one deal. But, the thrill and entertainment value are just the same. I have also been buying stuff that I don't know about. My last two purchases will both require a reference book of some sort, so I look forward to learning two new areas of numismatics.
