Well, not so much. I found it in my Dan Holmes IV auction catalog, and it's a "very common" N-2. If it does have a silver lining, the auction listing image looks much nicer than the sellers images. But really, there's no silver lining I'll post the excerpt of the catalog and some better images of the coin whenever I get it in.
He was a very prolific large cent collector. I believe he collected every die paring of business and proof strikes.
Really? Every one, including the "non-collectible" Sheldon varieties? Either way, that's pretty impressive.
Apparently he was only lacking two parings. http://www.pcgs.com/News/Goldberg-Auctions-Mccawleygrellman-To-Sell-Dan-Holmes-Collection-Of-Large
Dan's collection lacked only two varieties, the 1793 NC-5 which is unique and in the ANS collection, and 1851 N-42 I believe which is also unique and Dan could not convince the owner to sell it to him. (He did have several other varieties which are unique and some others where only two examples are known.)
Not saying you got that coin for a steal, but it sold in the Holmes auction for $115, if it makes you feel any better.
I got it in today, so here it is with the auction catalog page. It now has the very awesome McCawley/Punchard/Holmes/Kirkuleez provenance. The reverse is pretty dark so I lightened it up a bit, but the obverse is pretty much as it looks in hand.
I've been at this for fifty years and just made another rookie mistake. There was nothing wrong with the posting, but I thought I'd discovered a third 1802 stemless wreath. But I failed to account for the reverse being rotated and mixed up the berry leaf combination. It looked like the leaf/berry of the S-231 and the fraction bar and numerator of the S-241. It was a buy it now and I was headed to church and it would be gone before I returned so I bought it. When I returned home, I cropped the photo and rotated it to add to my_coin folder and realized my mistake. I had looked at the berry at (A)M which is below and free from the leaf tip rather than at O(F) which is at the leaf tip. Fortunately it wasn't too expensive a mistake.
@Kirkuleez The only thing I can make fun of you for is setting your max bid of $60 on a Proof Half Cent! I definitely have made your mistake many times. Last time was 2 months ago with a T1 SLQ in high AU.....that was only Type 1 by what was written on the holder. D'oh! That should teach me to never "Assume", because you know what that does.
This is a site I use for attribution using his collection. http://www.icollector.com/The-Pre-Long-Beach-Sale_as14916
It didn't last long in my hands, but it went to a very good CT member who is big on coppers. He can out himself if he wants. I'm pretty sure that he just wanted the kirkuleez pedigree though, I mean, who wouldn't?
Sorry Marshall but Kirkuleez was kind enough to sell it to me last year. I have it right her on the desk beside me.
No problem. That's a great provenance and history. I've been getting low grade rarities with some frequency lately, but no bargains. It teases with a low price for a week and a price explosion in the last 15 seconds. But I've gotten 2 S-94s, 2-S-95s and a S-129 recently.
