Some recent purchases as I journey along the one-per-ruler highway... Some late Empire siliquae. The Eugenius I love in particular:

    Eugenius.jpg

Eugenius, AD 392-394, Siliqua, Milan, Silver, RIC:32c
Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right
Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear
    DN EVGENIVS PF AVG
    VIRTVS ROMANORVM / MDPS

    I just love the toning!

And here's my brand new entry level Constantine III:

    ConstantineIII.jpg

Constantine III, Siliqua, 407-411 AD, Uncertain Mint, Silver
    Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right
Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear
    D N CONSTAN-TINVS P F AVG
    VICTORIA - AAVGGG

Bring on your late Roman Empire siliquae...

    Very nice.
I don't have a siliqua in my collection but would like to at some point.

It is curious that a common late roman bronze coin does not cost much compared to earlier Roman Imperials. A siliqua, however on average is worth more than a denarius!

Your examples are very nicely toned.

My understanding is that as the Empire lost territory, it lost access to silver mines. So the silver issues became scarce. Also, as the Empire declined, there was less commerce, and therefore less need to mint coins.

Nice additions to the set, Greg. I don't often collect this late into the Empire, but I've been seeing coins of Eugenius crop up fairly often in auctions these days. That's an excellent example you scored!

I didn't know that, thanks! I knew they were in scarcer supply today but did not know why.

You are picking up some nice and rare Romans Greg. You must have have a large number of rulers by now.

Nice ones there. I would love to add a siliqua to my collection, along with a few solidi. Just have to find the right auction.

Spectacular... the portrait on the Eugenius is outstanding. Also full flan, which is nice... it seems these are very often clipped. And I would be happy with a Const. III a third as nice!

My latest siliqua is Gratian (375-383), and my Eugenius is a nasty little AE4 from an indeterminate mint - maybe Aquileia? (Rare, though.)

    Very nice.

And yes, I have the vast majority of rulers now. All that's left is the ultra-rare.

Wow! that Eugenius is genius, and indeed has nice toning! Tough coin! I never had him at all, let alone such a nice one.

Nor have I yet owned a siliqua, though I've been sorely tempted by a couple of high grade, colorfully toned pieces.

Yes, it is one of my favorites. It came from the Sotheby "Hunt" Sale of Dec. 5 and 6, 1990, lot 21. Thanks for your note.
