Hello CT forum! I have recently discovered this 1982 D Lincoln penny weighing at 3.1 grams and if I'm not mistaken, this appears to be a wrong planchet error, since they're supposed to weigh 2.5 grams? I have not posted any pictures because I'm guessing that my description of the coin in question is such a rarity that's starting to resurface in the headlines again?

All help is appreciated and thanks to everyone in advance!

The mint made copper and copper plated cents in 1982. Yours is the copper.

I'm pretty sure in '82 they used both weight planchets in their transition to zincoids from copper.

    @ADHD
As stated - Early 1982 Cents were still being made with copper.
This is what you need to find -

Thank you very much for the quick response everyone! The penny also has a "ringing" sound when I do the finger sound test, but my most accurate hypothesis is the fact that the weight is 3.1g.

I never heard of your "ringing finger sound test".. You need to explain it please.

    Here's a quote from a thread back in 2006: "
The simple test for copper or zinc is the ring test. Balance the cent on the tip of your finger and lightly tap it on the rim with another coin. If you hear a clear ringing sound the coin is copper. If you hear more of a thud, the coin is zinc. Try it with both pre and post '82 coins to be sure you can hear the difference".

I found similar information on several websites explaining this method with various coins and you can tell the difference in sound just by "flicking" the coin with the tip of your finger.

Balancing the penny at the tip of your finger, tapping it with a penny that you know is the copper/ zinc 2.5 grams and listening to see if there is a ringing sound, because of the copper content being higher. The new copper/ zinc penny that started in 1982 is supposed to only weigh 2.5, whereas this one weighs in at 3.1.

I hope I explained this helps, thanks!

I used this test quite frequently in 1982. Just a light tap on the edge with a known copper cent. The zinc cents gave a dull clunking sound. It works quite well.

Does what? As others posted previously, you have one the billions of 1982-D copper cents minted that year. There were a few billion 1982-D Zinc cents minted as well

I was referring to the different "ring" sounds the different year of coin (metal composition) makes when you perform said test.

But as I stated previously, if I'm not mistaken, the metal composition for that particular year and mint, should weigh 2.5 grams, but this one in question comes out to 3.1 grams. I hope I explained that correctly:shame:.

The US minted BOTH TYPES of cents in 1982. You have the copper type that weighs 3.1 gms. They minted billions of them. The also minted billions of the zinc cents with the SAME DATE. The zinc cents weigh 2.5 grams. Sorry, but you don't have anything special

There were small date and large date cents in 1982.
    Between the two mints, P&D
    there are 7 different styles.
