@Bman33 -I've never seen that outer envelope for the uncirculated set. I like it. I wonder why they decided on a winter scene for the graphics. How much was he asking for these?
Now that I have a clarification I'll start comparing the two. $16.00 for whole set and $20.00 for the proof. I'm going to get one of each of the Unc sets.
Yes there are. See post #152 page 8 of this thread. Show great photo's of the 2 types and how to tell them apart. I believe the 1976 Type 1 Ikes were minted and circulated in 1975 and the Type 2's were circulated in 1976. I know the 1976 Type 1 Clad Proof came originally in the 1975 US Mint proof set.
Understood. But are there type one and two bicentennials for each of these silver uncirculated packs that I posted pictures of?
A quick check on eBay shows that the White Stripe Cello comes in both envelopes. So, at this point in time, only those with exceptional memories that ordered these coins in 1975/76 can say iof there is a difference between the two. I suppose it's possible, and it would make more sense, that the solid red envelope would be desirable but the buyer should forget this white stripe business and just look at the coins. Some, are just butt ugly. I DO remember these being offered in the mid-late 90's so, it's anybodies guess. I DON'T remember what the envelopes looked like at the time. @Bman33 - See my post on the IKE Groups forum.
I'm sure a lot of the plastic sleeves without the white strip (high speed specimens) came in a "fake" red envelope. The color was off a little (orangish), there was no heavy cardboard insert, and it was flimsier. These "fake" envelopes always carried the high speed coins. Wholesalers, in the old days, specifically omitted the high speed coins (no white stripe) from their buy offers and most of these have been melted. I'm not certain any of these high speed ones appeared in the red and white envelopes but I believe a few did. As I recall the best mint set quality specimens are in the red envelopes but those in the red and white were slightly better on average. There's not much difference and my experience could be sample error. I've never been a huge fan of these and didn't even always look at them when I was looking at mint sets. They are interesting coins and there are some really nice Gems. The average quality is very high though so the Gems don't really jump out at you.
Are there any apparent differences that you can tell? I'm going to buy one of each as well so that I can photograph them into one side-by-side image for comparison.
That's what I intend to do but I didn't have the time. I will let you know my finds once I get around to it. The Bicentennial Ikes in the white and red packages seemed much nicer.
I am curious as well. I also think I am going to pursue a non-white stripe version for my own collection.
@mikenoodle @Ike Skywalker @cladking @MontCollector @19Lyds What are you guys storing all your Ikes in? I am going to store them in plastic non-pvc flips then put them in clear plastic sheets. I am doing this because I don't want a Dansco Album. I will put the sheets in a regular three ring binder.
here's the thing, Bman the storage you're using sounds adequate, but where you choose to store it may have as big an effect, always keep that in mind.
@Bman33 - I keep my graded Ikes in PCGS slab boxes. I have a couple of sets in Capital Plastics holders, 3 sets are in Dansco albums, and the rest are kept in tubes or Coin World Premiere slabs. I don't keep any in flips- just personal preference.
OK, Saturday night and my Girlfriend is out. Good time for me to get to my Ikes! I am inventoring what I have so far and this is what it looks like (only a few are circulated, mostly focused on Silvers)::: x1 71D x2 71S Brown x2 71S Blue x1 72 Type 3 x3 72D x1 72S Brown x2 72S Blue x1 73S Blue x1 74D x1 76 Type 2 x1 76D Type 1 x1 76S Silver Proof x2 76S Silver Unc x2 77D x2 78D I'm now getting confused as to what to do next. All but two of my silvers are still in their original packaging (a 71S Silver Proof and 71S Silver Unc I did some experimenting on with acetone, they are the only ones out). I need direction on organization. I am accumulating them. @Ike Skywalker @MontCollector @mikenoodle @cladking @19Lyds @spirityoda
How to organize depends on how you want them displayed and if you want them to tone over time or not. The simplest way is to put the clad ones in 2x2's(which you can write on), then put them in binders with 2x2 sleeves. This will allow toning over time and is what I do. Eventually I will get a Dansco 8176 w/proofs album for them as well. I do put all my raw silver Ikes in Air-Tites and store them in boxes. I also have quite a few Brown Boxes and would have to break a couple open to fill holes in an album if I got one. I am one who believes in freeing coins from their mint cellophane. Having said that, once you have an album full of nice Ikes, you might want to consider leaving the rest in their OGP if you plan to hoard them.Makes storage a little easier. Ikes are very inexpensive(right now) and it is easy to become overwhelmed with them. Especially when you can buy a complete Dansco book for less than the price of some other single coins in your collection.
