I've got a question for you guys. Are circulated lincolns with rainbow toning worth hanging on to? Out of these 6 rolls from the other day, I pulled two with GORGEOUS toning and didn't know if I should hold on to them or toss them back into circulation. I know some people collected naturally toned morgans and such, but no idea as far as the lincolns and other coinage go. Also, do any of you have a good link for me to read up and educate myself a bit about toning? Thanx, Jasn
Yes, keep them. Rainbows are my favorite. As far as resources, search this and other forums for "toned", etc. and read lots. Also, check this website: http://www.tonedcoins.org/
I would keep them - presumably they only cost you 2 cents, right? Though I would look at them carefully, as they might be the results of someone's artificial toning expirements rather than natural.
Ahhhh back up my friend.... Coin collecting is too tied up with value Does the coin appeal to you? Do you like to look at it? Is it pretty? If so, by all means collect it and enjoy...ignore the value
Good point Jack! I have pulled a few common date wheats out of unc rolls that have a "greenish" tint to them. I like them so I keep them. Toning is not just for Morgans. I have seen Indian Cents that are a deep blue and they look INCREDIBLE. Never dismiss a nice brown piece of copper either. Of all my Two Cent Pieces (and I have a lot of them) one of my favorites is a "common date" 1865. Yes, it is uncirculated but it's a deep, glossy brown coin. It would not garner the prices that a Red/Brown or Red coin would but it is sharp and natural. I showed my number 1 set to my local dealers assistant one day and the coins he liked the most were the 1865 and 1871. This set contains an uncirculated 1864 small motto and 1872 which are both very tough coins. All I can say is he has a good eye to pick out the sharp brown coins.
Jack is right. Unless you're an investment collector, and I doubt you are or you wouldn't be on a hobby forum, then collect what catches your eye and you like. I have a whole stash of common Lincolns and Jeffersons that are very nicely naturally toned. Not worth anything on the market, but they're priceless to me. It's amazing the colors coins can take on. I say if you like them, keep them and enjoy them. Guy~
