I went to the coin shop today and picked up a couple coins to hold me over, but when I got home the mail man brought me the 3 coins I'm waiting for, all from different dealers/countries. I was surprised to get the all at once. The favorite is my FTR from Aquileia. CONSTANS 4.39g. 24 mm Obv: D N CONSTANS P F AVG. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right; A to left. Rev: FEL TEMP REPARATIO . Constans standing left in galley, holding crowning Victory on globe and labarum with Chi-Rho; A to left; to right, Victory steering galley left. AQP dot in ex Aquileia RIC 117. The nicest is a FH of Julian II from the local shop. Not sure what caused the high cheek bone. IT has a nice solid patina. Julian II . D N IVLIA-NVS NOB C, draped and cuirassed bust right / FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, soldier spearing fallen horseman who is wearing a Phrygian helmet, reaching backwards, M in left field, mintmark Delta SISL. Siscia RIC VIII 382 Next 2 are just a couple cheap Phoenix FTRs. The Constans could use some cleaning but I'd rather not attempt it. The Nicomedia is a bit harder to find. Constantius II DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / FEL TEMP REPARATIO, radiate phoenix standing right on globe. SMNS in ex RIC VIII Nicomedia 73A R3 Constans D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG: Bust of Constans, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right FEL TEMP REPARATIO: Phoenix, radiate, standing right on globe, star left. AN Delta in ex RIC VIII Antioch 131 The second coin from my local shop is Ptolemy III Euergetes, ae 17. Thats about all I know atm. It could all be improved with some cleaning, but not by me.
nice lookin' constans and julian...and i dig that little 17 mm ptolemy, a sub 20 mm version is on my list!
Big FUN @randygeki ! Shop and drop (by the mailman)! Constans: RI Constans 337-350 AE3 19mm Thesalonika mint Reparatio stdg CHI RHO banner
Thanks all and nice galleys ! What size is this one? A very nice one for the mint, even better if its a smaller one.
It's an AE-3...so a bit smaller than most of us prefer----but not the tiny AE-4 that I find hard to like very much due to my failing eye-sight
One more FTR arrived today. Just going to post it on this rather than make a new topic. I got a great deal on it, a little surprised it didn't get bid up higher. Constantius II A.D. 348- 350 20x23mm 4.5gm DN CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diadem, draped, cuirassed, globe in hand. FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, Emperor bare headed and in military dress standing, holding standard with cross on banner in his right hand, resting left hand on shield. Two bound captives standing to the left before him; ✶in left field. In ex. SMKE RIC VIII Cyzicus 84
