This may be a post for the younger crowd here but maybe a couple of you old folks will be able to join in.

Recently I have begun following more and more ancient coin related accounts on instagram and I was wondering if anyone else has some favourites they would like to share.

Leu Numismatik has recently begun posting some truly stunning coins on instagram (between the pictures of dudes in suits looking at coins): https://www.instagram.com/leunumismatik/

Despite your feelings about slabs NGC also posts on instagram quite regularly though they do tend to post more modern the odd ancient appears every now and then: https://www.instagram.com/ngccoins/?hl=en

The American Numismatic Society also frequently posts ancient coins: https://www.instagram.com/americannumismaticsociety/?hl=en

These are just three examples and I have some more that I can post later but I am interested in seeing if anyone else has some favourite coin social media accounts that they follow.

The only unfortunate thing with these accounts is that many have not learned the instagram feature to post multiple pictures so you often only get one side of the coin!

I have instagram but don't follow any coin feeds. I have a few that follow me though since I do post some coins now and then.

As one of the 'old folks' I see no value in Instagram. I can see pictures of coins anywhere. What exactly would the point be? I would love an explanation of just what it does for the average collector.

Also interestingly for me, just this morning while taking my son to school he asked me if I had a Twitter account. I said yes, but never used it as I saw no purpose. I asked him what he used it for. He said 'news, weather, stuff like that'. I dont see where one can get anything out of 140 characters. Probably why Trump is in the media so much. Can one really properly convey a message with such a restriction? If I want news, I look at my news feed. If I want weather I use the app.

I assumed by "social media" that you were talking about used coin books, needless to say I am disappointed. I also thought "tweet" was something a bird did, I guess not anymore?

I've always maintained that Twitter should change its name to something more accurate, such as "mindless drivel."

It's pretty much impossible to convey anything thoughtful in 140 characters, as proven by the billions of tweets each day.

    Enough off-topic ranting...

I don't use twitter. I had it for awhile about 9 years ago for so but found it annoying. I don't mind instagram though.

Ed, I assume that was your instagram site I removed. Please read the rules on self promotion, and sale items not allowed in general forums, only in advertising subforums . Jim

I condemn Facebook and Twitter for their egregious censorship and blatant support of terrorist groups like ISIS. So I just come to CT and be happy. :)

My three most prominent uses of instagram are: the two minutes after I finish a chapter in the book I am reading on the bus and don't want to begin a new chapter or stare at the back of the head of the person in front of me while I wait for my stop, between sets at the gym I either stare off into dead space or look at coins, or in the bathroom doing the 'business' where I am not in there long enough to read a chapter in a book and the GF gets annoyed if I keep auction catalogues in there.

Why instagram in these cases? Simply because it loads faster than pulling up [insert random coin website here] on my phone. Also, the majority of coin related websites are not mobile friendly and are a pain to navigate and those that are mobile friendly are poorly designed and not necessarily user friendly.

I think that there is an assumption that I would be using instagram while sitting at a computer screen which is incorrect.

Watch it you guys. baseball21 will open a can of "you know what" because you don't get how important the Internet is to the coin hobby.

My idea of coin social media is actually GOING TO an ANA show, look at coins, attend social events, and talk to the numismatic media. What a concept, right?

Twits tweet twaddle trying to tease, taunt, trash and tantalize. SAD and BAD convey A Mad Cad Lad. A=B=C thus 140 characters can say much covfefe

I use Facebook as a platform for selling coins that are moving slowly on eBay. That is the only reason I have not disabled my account.

@Whizb4ng, can you pm me your instagram?

To the others who see no value. For me, instagram takes the best part of facebook and leaves the worst. I get all the pictures without any of the rants... It's become my only social media...

This may come as an surprise as I'm relatively young, but I don't post any collectables, jewelry, or pictures of cash on social media. Although I have family and friends in my social media, I also have people who I don't know that well, and posting to random people that I have this or that collectable, and by the way I live in such and such a place and my name is....is a recipes for disaster. A woman in Florida was murdered 4 hours after she posted to Facebook that she thanked God for allowing her to go from broke to a six figure salary in 5 years. Probably murdered by a botched robery from an "acquaintance" on Facebook who took it as an invitation to commit armed robery.

This forum is my one exception, and even here most don't know my full name nor where exactly in Florida I live (except for 3 or 4 I regularly buy coins from)...and Florida is a big crowded place. I even use a VPN to scramble my IP address. Not that it would make it easy knowing my address as they would still have to get past armed security patrolling the neighborhood, cameras, a home alarm system, and well armed inhabitants in the house, only to discover that I don't keep too many coins at home anyway, as I have a safety deposit box at an undisclosed location.
