Starting an Ike Collection

Ok, I can get that one on Amazon for $14

 

I currently keep my silver and proof Ikes in Air Tites or their OGP I free my clad Ikes from their mint cellophane and put em in 2x2's which go in a binder with sleeves. I know this will eventually tone them, but I like toned coins.

If I were to get a display for them I think it would have to be a Capital Plastics holder.

 

Mont, Bman was asking questions on how to remove the toning, and from that I expect he didn't want to go through all that work just to re-tone them by putting them into a Dansco album.

 

Probably some dies were reused to strike the coins on high speed presses but I don't know. The means of mounting them is probably the same and they didn't use many brand new dies to run off millions of these.

The coins are distinctly different. The high speed Ikes have shallower relief and just look awful. The mint set quality coins are very nice and were struck at lower speeds and higher pressure by new dies.

 

I love it but then I'm prejudiced since I wrote one chapter.

I should have made it clear that the white stripe is on the plastic sleeve. On the regular strikes there is a white stripe and on the high speed ones there is no stripe.

 

Sometimes they let the little guy contribute.

 

I am very familiar with these and that some had a stripe. I just never understood why.

So I am getting a little overloaded but I want to come up with a strategy for the ANA World's fair of money and getting some awesome Ikes there. Any tips on how to go about it. There will be over 500 dealers there I believe. I should probably get some more knowledge under my belt too.

 

Oh I misunderstood. I thought @Bman33 was trying to remove the residue left from the OGP. Not the toning. Toning can't be removed residue can.

 

Study up on current pricing and buy the ones YOU like. Always good advice.

 

If you can find them I'd strongly suggest 'out of the money" slabs. People submit coins for high grades and some times they come back low grade. If you can pick these up cheap ($10) they can be steals. Keep your eyes open and ask dealers if they have anything.

@Bman33 - I'm getting close to finishing my 3rd Dansco Ike Dollar set. For this one I decided to make a "virtual" Capital Plastics holder in order to view them digitally- just for fun. There are many ways to enjoy one's sets. I had to reduce these images tremendously because they are MASSIVE in size. Here it is:

 

And this is the main book I have on Ikes. I also have the latest Whitman book on modern dollars. Both are excellent!

 

Here's something to consider, Bman, you will likely learn more at the ANA show than you will between now and then.

There are going to be more Ikes there than you have ever seen. Raw, slabbed, OGP, the whole shootin' match.

It is the experience of looking at hundreds of coins that will teach you the majority of what you need to know. The rest is the technical stuff.

Just remember that first you have to know what a good Ike looks like to know a diamond in the rough.

 

Well, truthfully the discussion started in regards to haze, which is removed like toning with a commercial dip, but we've veered into removing gunk as well.

The conversation has certainly wandered, but I think it's been a really informative thread and there's been a lot of good information exchanged.
