Personally, I dont see anything wrong with symbolizing Native American heritage on a United States coin. Some of the design ideas they have are fine but I'd like to see them put different tribal chiefs on the coin. Being that I have Apache ancestors, I would push to have at least one of them represented. As much as he's not readily recognized, my Great Great Grandfather (my Grandmothers mothers father) Naiche,(picture in my profile), would be a good choice. He was the last Chief of the free Apaches. But his father Cochise, would be the one that would be chosen. My answer to the question is yes, it is needed.
The mint product line is bloated. No one I know (non coin people that is) even knows about the president dollars, they are over doing it.
When did I say I had an issue with Native American heritage? In fact I have some too.. Cherokee And my fault for not making my point clear... but Danr got it... I think the Mint (and Government) sees collectors as a source of additional income... sad... very sad...
This is what I don't get - why ? They always have. From the very beginning the mint has made Proofs just for collectors, and sold them for a profit. Then they made commems for collectors and sold them for a profit. Then they made mint sets, and modern commems - etc etc. This is nothing new - if they couldn't make money by doing it, they wouldn't do it. That is their goal and always has been - to make a profit. It was always the goal of any mint since the very first one.
Needed or not I think there's a place for more native Americans on the Sac $. The Navajo code talkers for one.
You didnt say and I didnt take it that way, just stating my opinion. You asked if it was needed and I simply said it was.
Fortunately this shouldn't contribute to extra product line bloat since it replaces one line, the Sac dollar, with one line the single design each year of the Native American dollar. If they were doing multiple designs each year I would object but one design per year is not a problem. It is the same as just getting this years coin which people would do anyway.
the only thing is when this happens................we'll lose the beautiful eagle reverse! i say just create a whole new design each year honoring different tribes or chiefs or deeds etc. i think it would work. grizz
I'm very much in favor of Native American themes on coins. They would make American coinage very unique in the world, and all of the early coinage with Native American motifs, such as the buffalo nickel, gold (and fractional) eagles, and the modern buffalo commem dollar, etc., are extremely popular with collectors and the public. I'm looking forward to these and will also await gold or silver equivalents for collectors.
I wonder how many in congress actually think this will help circulate dollar coins in the US. I wish they had voted to change the Obv. the sac. Rev. is one of my Favorites.
I would also like to see the obverse change instead of the reverse. I believe its one of the better reverse designs we've had for a while.
I have to say that the edge lettering is a stupid idea. Have you ever tried to read the date on the Presidential dollars? The proofs actually seem worse.
