Displaying a Lincoln cent collection

I'd like to know how people who are collecting the Lincoln cent series keep their coins. I have a lot of coins in an album, but some of the key date coins in slabs. Do you
a) crack the slabs and put the coins in the album (doubt it)
b) put all the raw coins in slabs (only for the wealthy)
c) put low grade placeholders in the key coin spaces in the album
d) put a "see separate report" note in the key coin spaces.
e) Buy 300 Littleton plush bears and make a coin necklace for each Lincoln cent.
f) None of the above: my Lincoln cent collection is locked up in my safe deposit box and no one will see it until after they read my will.

I am thinking either C or D......that is my plan for both my lincolns and my morgans (i like my GSA CC's)

 

I do d), but at your suggestion, I think I will see what e) looks like. That sounds more interesting.

 

All of the common date Lincolns I have are in my Whitman Classic Album. Key dates that I have are slabbed by either PCGS or NGC.

 

Intercept Shield Album except for my 5 keys.
They're slabbed and in an Eagle Certified Coin Album.

 

My Lincoln set is all in a dansco album..I broke out my 9svdb to put it in the album. I also have a 22 plain & 55DD in the album...

 

My '09-S VDB, '14-D, '22 Plain, '55 DDO and soon my '09-S are in slabs and will stay there.
Nothing else has enough value in the grades that I have to merit slabbing, although the '31-S will get the treatment if I need a 5th coin when I submit.

 

a. Use a Half-Dollar "Titled Page" from Dansco which will have 20 ports per page.
b. Buy Airtight direct-fit holders for cents (19mm), the outer diameter will press-fit nicely into the above page.
c. Buy the appropriate Dansco binder(s) and slipcase(s)
d. Buy the Dansco single-sheet currency inserts, to place between pages, so your Airtights don't bump and scuff each other.
e. Buy clear ink-jet labels to label the front and back of each port. Cover the Half Dollar heading on top of the page with an opaque label describing Lincoln Cents 1909-xyz, etc.
f. Buy a Dansco 2x2 page for the rear of the book, to place labels from any coins you break out of slabs.

With that said, if a coin means a lot to you financially, or it's value depends on conditional rarity, or you plan on selling it soon, I would not mess with the slab.

I bought one type of every known half-dollar page, knowing the diameter of a half-dollar was close to the outer diameter of an Airtight holder. Some didn't work well, bowing the pages, etc. But the Dansco is a nice press-fit, and I have removed some Airtights maybe a dozen times, with no loss of holding power.

This method takes more room than a straight-up binder with sheets, but IMHO is way more protective, AND you can remove individual coins for replacement or photographs, without disturbing the others.

If I had time I'd post pics, but this is how I safely store mine but in a format where I can flip through and enjoy them. A shoebox full of slabs is nice protection, but bulky and poor for display.

Wow! That's impressive. I considered the Airtight route, but their albums are really uninteresting.

 

My personal xf/au/bu set is a Littleton Archival album, keys and all, but I saved the broken slabs on the s-vdb,14-d and the 31-s. The set is 1909-1958 with proofs 50-58 in the last 9 extra spots. Only empty hole in the book is the 22 no-d.

I have dbl row boxes for the rest that are always revolving. I have a full roll of vdb in vf or better in a white square plastic tube.

 

Heh heh, yah I don't like the Airtight books either. The Dansco fits in with the rest of my stuff, and believe me the presentation looks nice with 20 Airtights stuck in a page. It was worth my time to finally get a system that 's protective but easy for me enjoy.

 

I've been putting my AU & BU IHCs & Lincolns in Airtites and leaving the certified coins in their slabs. The 1/2 $ Dansco idea seems reasonable. I'll have to try it.

 

My reason for leaving slabs as slabs is that I will probably die with my collection intact.
Slabs give the people who inherit my collection a better chance of getting good prices for the coins if they wish to sell.
And at 65 I'm closer than I'd like to be to this happening.

 

If I were ever to get back into collecting Lincoln's, I'd probably crack the slabs. But enough about me, lol. Greyfang - would you be able to get some pictures of that album of yours? It sounds like a really awesome idea.
