    Does this coin look right to you? I have a chance to buy it but will be based on authenticity when I can examine it in person.

    Two things that immediately stand out as fake to me: the denticles do not go all the way to the edge like they should and the coin is grainy like it was poured.

    If you're ever going to buy early dollars, you should make yourself an expert on them. If you don't have the time, here's a quick reference, provided to me by @SuperDave http://www.earlydollars.org/wizardhome.htm

    You're welcome. I'd be curious who is selling it and whether they know better. Could be an attempt at fraud here. I wouldn't put too much effort into pushing the "it's fake" approach, but if it's a coin dealer, I would much like to know that name.

    Just wondering why a $5000 US coin is not certified and not in a slab...!? If I had to guess I'd say because it's obviously <fill in the blanks>

    If that's fake (and I highly suspect that it is) it's better than a lot of fake ones out there.

    I will say that there is NO way in Hades I would drop a huge sum on a raw, uncertified early US coin in that price tier.

    I wouldn't touch that with a twenty-foot pole.

    If I had that kind of money (and I don't) I would focus on a nice original-surfaces example certified by a top-tier grading service like PCGS or NGC, or at least a second-tier service like ANACS or ICG that can be trusted for authentication purposes if not grading.

    There are FAR too many scary-good Chinese fakes around nowadays. They're even putting fake coins in fake slabs.

    Edited to add: I'm not suggesting your junk silver guy is trying to rip you off. He may not know. Just beware, is all I'm sayin'. Be very 'ware.

    It has a reeded edge, the genuine ones had edge letters.

    The graininess of the obverse stood out to me even on the screen of my $50 smartphone, before I noted the reeding. At that point, the thing was done and I didn't bother looking further on a small screen.

    Home, now, I'm seeing a not-terrible copy of B-14/BB-51. Details are close enough for me to think it done by a transfer die.
