So today I feel a little luckier than usual, and wanna post this. Skating to work, I stopped in Frys as usual, to look in the water machine/coin star rejected slot, and got a few good coins. Saw my first ever South Korean coin today(coin star), Got my first two NIFC Kennedy half dollars 2012 P and D proof coins (local head shop in 4.50 in half dollar when the guy said 5.. just saying lol). And found yet another 1943 S steal penny(coin star) and 2 2009 (both Lincoln on a log no variety) pennies with a dime in the coin star all in pretty nice shape. Weighed everything I got in the coin star they were all in spec. And no that Kennedy p is not a DDO . Didn't get that lucky, it's just die deterioration. But hey, it's only a dollar lol and I am keeping them where they should be lol oh almost forgot a wheat penny 1953 s. not posting pics of some. Just the ones I like the most. Top it off, a 1980 science experiment gold colored penny lol Look at that die deterioration, never seen anything as bad as this haha and a proof coin too... sad lol.
Your 1980 cent is an abomination, but that '43-S steelie is quite nice for a circ find! Every time I've gotten one in circulation (never CoinStar), it's been all rusted out. Cool flow lines on the Kennedy.
@Tyler Graton The 2012 P&D Kennedy's are not proof coins. Although the term "Not Intended for Circulation" (NIFC) is often used to describe some of the Kennedy half dollars produced since 2001 you might also find others referring to them as "business strikes". Chris
my mistake lol! sometimes i get confused as to whats what. I didnt know they could be used as buisness strike coins haha i thought you had to pay more for their face value?
haha i know i still thought it looked cool too about the flow lines. But yeah i dont intend keeping the 80's coin, just thought it looked cool. lol i know it sucks, hahaha. thats why its in my spender coin bag. Yeah ive actually found one more in the coin star before and this one was in way better condition (got excited when i found it too). but it was philly. i got one of my steelie from a guy here who gave it to me if you remember! and the rest i found all in the coin star! Steelie/silver/foreign, and the whatnots. (ill post all my steelies i found next post)
Well, you're light-years ahead of me in CoinStar finds. I've gotten one cratered-out green crud-monster Zincoln that was unidentifiable (but post-1982) ... and a cheap brass earring. That's all. Ever.
I check two coin stars on the way home and thats not counting the years ive check the coin stars when they were convenient. I think i lied, i think the finger print one, is the one i found in a coin roll at work. but yeah. skateboard life! When i spend my money i look for money on the way out
The US Mint is required by law to produce specific numbers of each denomination for circulation, but this does not mean that they must be distributed. Many people started using the term NIFC for business strike coins because the same dies and the same production procedures are used for both. Just thought you'd like to know! Chris
No they aren't. They only HAVE to produce if the Fed requests the coins. They will normally produce some ahead of time to have on hand to fill Fed orders. There is no law that says they HAVE to produce any given business strike coin. Coins are authorized for production not mandated. In 2001 the Fed told the mint they would not be ordering any more half dollars until further notice. Since then they have only made a small number for mint sets and to sell directly to collectors, none for circulation. Same with the Sac dollars after 2001, and all the dollar coins after 2011. And since the fed isn't ordering any the mint could stop striking halves and NA dollars at any time they so choose. But they make money selling them to collectors at a fat profit.
I stand corrected! At least I have the courtesy to acknowledge your explanation. It's more than I can say for you. Chris
Well there was only about 2 million of these struck and if it wer e a buisness strike coin, I'd say it's pretty nice shape for that classification. But I think I'm gonna keep em just plainly on how many were made and how nice they are. Well the D is pretty nice for being in circulation. It ya I guess I keep em lol might not be worth it. But heck I like a shiney coin.
Found this today at the circle k. love these coins. Too bad it's not type one or two. No peg leg either and my other one I found at McDonald's was a little nicer. But this awesome
Proofs for that year were made in San Fran.........what you have are business strikes [edit] Oops......already posted.
I'd say the Kennedy half dollar got really confusing after 2001.. seems like ppl call em what they want to call em haha. I know now they aren't proof I forgot that it's suppose to have the S mint mark.
I apologize, too. Just in case he finds the "like" I gave you on your correction of him offensive. Why take the chance?
