Good day, wondering if I can get any help here. Received this yesterday. It appears to be a 2010 Presidential Gold dollar that is press on silver metal. I see no color difference anywhere on the coin. The rim is also stamped as one would expect. Any help on what I may have here? If nothing else it was neat to see.....

My first guess would be that hucksters are silver/gold/platinum-plating these the way they do quarters. I don't think there are any planchets currently in production that would be the right size, and it looks like the coin doesn't have any original mint luster -- plating tends to conceal the luster, leaving a flat "shiny" surface.

I, too, suspect that it has been plated.

I agree it is likely plated

Thank you all. There are a few scuffs on it so I will take it to work and look it over under a microscope. Can I assume that I should see some gold under the plating if it is indeed plated?

This I don't understand. As I read on the new dollar they a single material not a laminate so the gold/brass/copper color should be all the way through the piece, correct? Or am I reading it wrong and you mean it is simply not Gold as in the element but an alloy? Thank you all again.

    The alloy is 88.5% Copper - 6% Zinc - 3.5% Manganese - 2% Nickel. No gold .

There is a difference between a gold dollar and a golden dollar. Real gold dollars were produced from 1849-1889. The Sac, Native American and Prez dollars are often referred to as golden dollars.

    • a pure copper core

    • with an outer layer made of 77% copper, 12 % zinc, 7% manganese, and 4% nickel.
This unique combination of metals gives the dollar coins their golden appearance.
