MS 63 ...It looks prooflike as well ...some hairlines in the obverse fields likely keep it out of a high MS grade...nice coin!
Not a World Coin guy, but I would estimate the obverse to be a 63 and the reverse could go 65. It was probably kept at the 63 level though. I would send it to NGC, I've heard they are much better with World Coins than PCGS. I bet NGC might give it a 64 with a possible PL designation.
63 and yes, PL, though whether a TPG would so designate it on a label is anyone's guess. I did vote MS62 in the poll to "err on the side of caution". My instincts said 63 and then the conservative little voice in my head whispered, "Pretend you're a grader at PCGS. How would you grade it then?" Regardless of technical/numerical grade, it's a very handsome coin. That frosty prooflike contrast is quite attractive. Would I keep such a coin in my collection if I had it? You bet I would. That's a stunner.
I'm going with 64. Whatever I think about gold, it always seems to grade higher. I thought 63 first, so I picked 64.
I gave it a grade of MS-63...but forgive me for asking as I am somewhat of a beginner when it comes to coin collecting.Someone in this thread gave it a designation of PL.What is PL?
PL is proof-like. I'm going with MS62, but it's impossible to tell if it's PL from the photos. It's really tough to get a PL designation from NGC though, especially for gold.
The bell curve says 63. Drum roll please...,,, Currently housed in a PCGS AU55 holder. Was second finest known when it was graded, at the time the finest was an AU58. The only explanation for the grade is a bit of rub on the highest portions of the neck. My own grade, were I in the grading room: MS62.
I agree- it's worth a shot at resubmission. And since it'll have to go Secure Plus nowadays, you'll get a TrueView image out of the deal. Maybe it's a super-slider and maybe it's not - it's hard to judge from pictures alone- but it's a great looking coin and not a type one sees every day, for sure.
Welcome to CT Steve...FYI...a coin can be considered "proof like" without being a proof coin...and a proof struck coin isn't necessarily proof like. Here's a helpful link you might like: https://www.pcgs.com/books/silver-dollars/Chapter15-036.aspx
While I don't see the wear in the photographs, I'm also not really familiar with this series. These aren't the best pictures, and telling AU vs MS is often really difficult even from good pictures. For something like AU-55, there has to be a noticeable amount of wear - it's hard to believe they'd flub that bad (55 to 63 is an *enormous* jump!) That being said, we are talking about PCGS "grading" foreign coins..... why would anyone ever submit foreign coins to PCGS?
