Can anyone shed light on this coin? Found today while searching 1963s It is smooth on the edge so dont think it was ground down to a smaller diameter and weighs 2.7g. Appears untampered. Several pics Thank you in advance. Was there a foreign planchet in 63? Or reason for this? Read a little about incomplete punch which maybe explains and they say genuine incomplete punches are rare
When it comes to such things, think Occam's Razor and that the most obvious possibility is also usually the correct one. Your coin, unfortunately, does show clear evidence of tampering, and while it's not outside the realm of possibility that a true error could show such damage, 99%+ of the time such coins are simply damaged as opposed to genuine errors that just happen to be severely damaged.
Thanks for the response and i see the scuffs too however the part im having a hard time with is the rim edge.....it looks identical to all other rims ive scoped it to 10x and 15x but cant seem to get a nonblurry pic so i added pics.....not arguingat all....im no expert nor beginner kinda in between and i would think if the rim was ground off it would be super easy to see the grind marks..thanks for your help....one person said the color was odd but looks like the browns i have here so took that pic too..... thanks again
I know you're not arguing, and is certainly appreciated, but asking questions, or simply questioning what you're told (as opposed to just accepting it as fact) is a wise move and one you'll be the better for. Simply accepting any one person's view/advice/opinion as fact in this hobby, and especially on this forum, can be risky to say the least. That said, the rims on your coin do show clear evidence of damage. While I hesitate to say anything simply because I cannot see as well as I'd like, and do not have the coin in-hand, let's just say I find the appearance of edges questionable as well. With the understanding that photos can sometimes be misleading, I see no problems with the color.
Back when Ma Bell priced pay phone calls at 10c it was not uncommon for people to file or mill off the edges of cents to get them to the approximate dimensions and weight of a dime. I have gotten some of them in dime rolls, even BWR rolls. They show up in CWR cent from time to time more often than dime rolls. The raising of the cost of a call from a dime to a quarter saw the end of cents being so modified - but there are a bunch of them out there. I probably have several dozen from cent box searches.
Those cents should still be able to fit certain machines, as dimes. If the size and weight is correct.
