I'm going to say two things, then go to sleep.... 1. Welcome @LaCointessa to the forum. 2. I cannot wait to see your first ancient. I got my first one in c. 1986 and I can still remember the thrill of ordering it, the anticipation of waiting for it to arrive and the sense of wonder that came with the privilege of holding an almost 2000 year old object in my hand. I still feel all of that every time I get a new coin. I hope it has the same effect on you! 3. Don't worry about the comments c9ncerning the attitude of the people here. I have only been a member for a short time, but I was welcomed with open arms and made to feel at home and part of the group from the start. The people here possess an amazing amount of knowledge are are willing to share it not just freely, but joyfully. Even though I've been collecting ancients since the 80s, the last six months or so have been the most enjoyable in this hobby for me because of this forum and those who inhabit it. 4. That was three things, but I don't think there is a penalty for too many comments.
Picking up on "obscure references" and noticing minutiae is what the study and appreciation of ancient coins is all about, after all
@Aethelred 1. Thank you very much. 2. Yes. I felt the thrill and anticipation that you describe; but, am working on not feeling that way in case the coins do not make it into my hands. I'm sure I'll get excited again when and if I receive them. 3. I'm not worried about the comments; but, thank you. Thank you.
I have not had the chance to introduce myself and to say Welcome! Virtually all the time, comments here are very constructive and helpful. I hope you enjoy their input. I come from an age that we were not afraid to be rough and tumble, but I find there is no reason to be spiteful, or unprofessional. Most people will speak as if we are NOT behind a computer screen, rather we were face-to-face, and as if in the same room with each other. It makes it fun and enjoyable for our hobby! Good luck on your new in-coming Ancients! I have a bad habit of having 5-10 in-bounds each week...
@TIF I wanted to add to the dark side discussion. The first time I heard the term was on this forum a couple years ago. It was explained at the time to mean all the world and ancient dealers were on the dark side of the coin show, not up in front or where the premium tables were located. Not sure how true this is.
I'm sorry that you had trouble with the link to my page. I just tried it and it worked. Are you using some sort of firewall that forbids unknown links? Perhaps you can get there using the index page link http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/ and selecting the Abbreviations page from the Technical menu near the bottom of the long page. Another possibility is to Google doug smith ancient coins While there, do feel free to look at any or all the other pages.
@dougsmit - I was able to reach the page. Thank you! And thank you HEAPS for using black lettering on gray background. I can actually see it. I will never understand why people use light gray lettering. Often I want to read what is there - often it is interesting and informational; but, it gives me a headache. Maybe young eyes can read it. I look forward to reading your pages.
@LaCointessa I think you will fit in just fine here. I look forward to future posts. I congratulate you on your new and first purchase. I hope that if anything you come to realize that there are many, many, many, many......many ancient kingdoms, cultures, republics, confederations and tribes that struck a multitude of ancient coins. The wonderful thing about collecting ancient coins is that there is something for everyone and it is impossible to collect them all even if you were a millionaire and lived for a thousand years. I hope when you really get into the hobby you reconsider what is thought to be ancient and what is considered medieval, you will find with coins ancient and medieval mean different things in different places and the transition occurred at different times in different places. Kudos and congrats!
and @Aethelred Loll! I feel your excitement and it's fun. However, since we do not yet know if these coins I'm hoping will arrive are real ancients or fakes, let us not die as we wait to see them. Okydoky? Great. Thank you.
I never understand why you ancient-folk seem so superstitious about showing auction-photos? (showing photos before your actual coins arrive) ... that isn't going to stop your coins from arriving!! (the coin voodoo dolls ... now that is a totally different story!!)
@stevex6 I am not superstitious but I don't count my chickens before they hatch. I'm also like that about money I expect get even if I have already 'earned' it. I do not feel that I have it I do not feel it is in my hand until I'm holding cash or the instrument representing the expected amount is liquid in my account.
No problem ... too each, their own I can't actually see the cash in my bank account, but I believe it is there ... and I guess I feel the same way about the coins I purchase? (I can't see 'em yet, but I'm expecting them to be here, eventually) ... again, some people are jinxy (I am not a jinx person) ... ummm, unless you're a black cat, because I don't want to cross paths with a black cat!!
Not to drag this out - but just in case I wasn't clear. I can confirm with my bank that a certain instrument has cleared and that I can spend or withdraw the money the instrument represents. But how can I be sure that the coins I purchased will arrive, even eventually, when they are still in the control of others or the post office? Anyhoo. I'll post photos of them as soon as they come! It should still be interesting to see the photographs they used for the descriptions and the photographs I take when I have the coins in my possession.
well LaCointessa, you should feel at home here in ancients now. over 1000+ post and you haven't even posted a pic of a coin yet:0. it would be hard to find a more hospitable group of peeps wouldn't you say?
Yes! I would say! But I ain't got no ancient to post a photograph of yet. Ooooh...I get it. Okay, I'll be quiet and just observe here in ancients until my coins arrive and I can post photos! (See? I catch on...eventually).
I think you may have taken @gregarious wrong. I believe it was a compliment that you've been able to interact with all your posts and still not have a coin. I also think it was a shout out to the Ancients group as a whole for being the sort we are.
Oh! @Bing. Well I do feel comfy here because you all are so welcoming and patient. I look forward to really being a part of the ancients group by owning an ancient. Next week, I hope! Thank you for clarifying. @gregarious - I did misunderstand your post.
