I have just discovered that I bought the wrong coin. I wanted a copper of Julia, daughter of Augustus, so I quickly acquired it as the price was very reasonable. Unfortunately it was a "Julia Augusta" which is another name for Livia and I already have one of these. My six years of high school classical Latin should have warned me it was a nominative rather than a genitive i.e. Julia Augusti. I now have to look for a Julia; which are not easy to come by. Have any of you guys mistakenly bought the wrong coin? Come on - own up!
I would say wine and eBay. Wine and Heritage. Walking around a show and forgetting what I had. Misreading my 'already own' list. Shoot I was at Baltimore and bought two of the same coin/date the same day -- filled in the blank twice. Misreading a date (easier to do in the non US stuff). Etc.
Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I also collect certain stamps and have duplicated on occasion. Regarding my partner, now thats a bit of a worry......
If the coin reads IVLIA AVGVSTA is is of Julia Domna wife of Septimius Severus 193-211 AD. I suggest you hang around the Coin Talk Ancient section before making other purchases.
Thanks Doug, the guys on Coin Chat are friendly and helpful and I intend to hang around. Unable to photo the coin at the mo but it is a Livia dupondius struck by Clavdivs, 29.8mm - 16grms. It says: DIVVS AVGVSTVS - S C/DIVA AVGVSTA. Thanks for the help.
And your complaint is? Half the coins in this pile of coins I've bought this year were "the wrong coin" (ie. coins I wasn't planning on buying but got on impulse or mistake, etc.) That never stopped me from buying more. I don't think there is such a thing as "the wrong coin" when it comes to ancients. Just coins that spoke out to you for one reason or another. Do you still like the coin? If so, enjoy it.
Everyone who has a decent size collection has done it before. You can always do what I did and turn to the whole cares collection, I like I buy
I agree with you Sallent; what I meant by wrong coin was that I had misidentified it and placed it in the wrong location in my Julio-Claudian collection, which is almost complete and I hope to post it soon. Lovely group of coins, and btw; nemo sobrii choris
I've never done beer and eBay, but I have done beer and a travel site which resulted in a previously unplanned excursion to Paris for my wife and I.
