Yah, I saw red_spork's other sweet thread on pentagrams and it made me go snag this thrifty lil' morsel ($19 US, delivered => cha-ching!!) My favourite seller wasn't 100% sure on his attribution ... I would love it if one of you coiners could verify and/or offer any other info on this thrifty and cool new addition (thanks, in advance) Umayyad, Anonymous AE Fals Date: 730-740 AD Diameter: 14.3 mm Weight: 2.6 grams Obverse: Pentagram Reverse: Legend We did find this similar example ... anyway => I'm a sucker for a cool thread, so I thought $19 was a reasonable price to jump on-board!! (all aboard!!) => oh, and this is only my 2nd coin from this rare coin-century!! (ya gotta like it, eh?) red_spork => I'm sorry for hogging-in on your coin-theme (but I always start a new thread when I score myself a coin) ... thanks for your coin-patience
Cool catch Steve. I had a feeling this was Andalusian from similar looking examples (albeit w/o pentagrams). Its from a very interesting time in Spain's history, right after the conquest of the Visigothic Kingdom and the establishment of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula.
Thanks Jango ... yah, I kinda figured that this coin-century might draw you into my thread (I appreciate the extra info ... very cool)
Thanks geki Yah, my only other coin from this coin-century (8th AD) is this baby ... Constantine V with Leo IV. Æ Follis Mint: Struck in Syracuse Reign: AD 741-775 Diameter: 20 mm Obverse: Constantine V, bearded, on left, and Leo IV, beardless, on right, each standing facing, wearing crown and chlamys and holding akakia; between their heads, cross Reverse: Leo III, bearded, standing facing, wearing crown and chlamys and holding cross potent Reference: Sear 1569 Other: Good Very Fine … Virtually full reverse legend => oh, and please post any relevant coins (no real rules)
Sweet little coin @stevex6 . I've never seen that type before, but it looks cool. My one coin from this century, also Umayyad.
that's a cool little islamic coin! doesn't seem like you see pentagrams much on these? modern islamic coins from morroco come to mind...i'm sure there are others. i don't have many 8th century coins either, here's one early islamic i have from that era... Arab Bukhara, Abassid Caliph Al-Mahdi, 775-785 AD. Billon drachm. O: Bust right, Arabic legend behind (Al-Madhi), Sogdian legend before. R: Fire altar, head right. 26 mm, 2.5 g remember several years ago we did a "coins by century" thread? maybe it would be fun to do one of those again?
Awesome thread-additions, gang (I appreciate the coin feedback) Anybody else have any 8th century AD winners?
