Has anyone here visited Equatorial Guinea recently and seen these coins in circulation?

Errors do happen. They even get passed a lot of workers at the mint. :p

Politicians do not belong on coins. Artwork, particularly good artwork by a recognised artist such as Goya, does.

I wonder how much trump got for the use of his image. And if he didn't get anything I wonder how much he is suing them for.

The one downfall of being a public figure such as a president. His image can be used for parody, for profit etc and there is not much if anything he can legally do about it.

    Didn't think so.

Well, there is also a silver version of that piece; of course silver does not circulate either. :) But I tend to differentiate - a coin such as the Gold Eagle, for example, does have its domestic market. And probably that is even the biggest market for the AGE.

Now when a company in Liechtenstein and a private mint in Germany make a coin for a dealer/distributor in the US, and make a deal with some "randomly picked" country that does not really have anything to do with the coin but is glad to get paid for declaring it legal tender (in this case it is Equatorial Guinea, on other occasions it's Niue, Palau etc.), the connection to the supposedly issuing country is by and large ... zilch.

Totally agree. I buy quite a bit of this stuff (Liberia, Cook Islands, etc.) but only because it is 99.99% silver and it sells below spot. I would never pay a premium for them and I think of it the same way I do silver rounds.

You could make some coin from a country called "Outer Slobovia" and most people that buy those made for TV coins wouldn't know any better.

Ah, but if those Slobovian "coins" are nicely designed and have an attractive composition/price ratio ... ;) While I would not buy any, there are collectors who like (and quite possibly purchase) issues from such hitherto unknown micro-nations.

There's some beautiful and even some stunning coins coming out of the various mints doing the other nation minting. If nothing else they certainly have to be given for a lot of the innovating processes they have come up with over the years. Even if those innovations aren't someones cup of tea it's nice to see some mints pushing the envelope and usually they will end up doing at least a few things with those that people will end up liking.

Would make some sense, yeah. But as you know, we won't get political here. Besides, we know that this Mayer Mint is not in Russia. :)
