I just found my first 'good' not in circulation

I never actually started looking until about a week ago, so I never found anything before. My first unsual number is a 2003 star note. I know it doesn't have any value over $1, since it's circulated, but I like it nonetheless. I'm also going to use this thread to post all of my bill finds, if there ever are any more!

Welcome to currency collecting. Betting that star note has a few zeros at the front of the serial number.

Keep looking. There's a lot to be found out there.

here is the place to go that tells you if you should spend or save it. i save anything that isn't in the white zone. yours is common, value $1.

Well, that didn't bother me. I was already quite confident it was worth $1, but things that are interesting or valuable for other reasons don't necessarily have any numismatic. I have some errors that are worth several hundred times over face value, and some that worth $0.01, but I like them all! I'll admit that a valuable find would be more exciting, anything out of the ordinary is very novel to me.

I like seeing the production numbers on star note runs

Yes, that's true. The way to collect banknotes is an individual preference. Most importantly, you enjoy the hobby of banknote collecting.

I found my second star note in change today. I checked, and the note has no extra value, but I like the way it looks. It's also heavily circulated. Nothing special, but cool for a new collector like me.

I always enjoy finding them in circulation. It usually starts up a conversation when I tell someone that I found one. Next thing you know they are pulling out their money checking for star notes.

Yes, they are quite fun. Most have no value over face, but still, cool to find.

Speaking of stars, I found another $1 star note today. I checked, and it's worth face. I'll put it in my hoard anyway!

What you have to remember with these low value notes is, that if you put them away now and they are in good condition they will appreciate over time. Most of those in circulation will not be kept and therefore wear out and dissapear. So you are doing the right thing by keeping them as long as the condition is ok :D

That's what I thought! As most coin collectors know, mintage numbers have little to do with the value of a coin. After all, there were over 400,000 1933 double eagles minted! ;) I assume the same applies to bills.

Maybe, just maybe, one of my hoards will pay off! At least with bill hoards, if I have 100 of those, that's not bad, but with 100 wheats... I have $3.00! Still, I really like the way star notes and wheats look, especially in hoards. Why I have a bicentennial quarter hoard, I'll never know... maybe some day they'll be worth 26 cents.

26 cents for a BiCentennial! Think of the profit! Got 28 rolls myself in my "vacation" fund.

Seriously though currency collecting is such a different world. Your comment about 1933 double eagles actually is a good comparison. Not often that coins are melted down by the Feds but notes being destroyed is an everyday occurance.

I have amassed a few thousand in face value of star notes. I have also passed on at least that much - gets expesive you know?

I don't see them like I used to as I don't have access to the cash I used to. I still keep them until I can at least determine whether or not it's worth my while. I always try to keep at least one from each block of any denomination I find. There are some very tough star notes to be had out there. Don't care what anyone tells you.

There are also some very tough non star notes to be found in circulation. These really get overlooked therefore the numbers available shrink rapidly. Example is the 1995 $1 E-T notes. 6.4 million printed and bet 4-5 million of those are long gone.
I have 50 consecutive that I paid a premium for. They now list at $15 each.

Lots of research but a lot of fun.

Thanks for the tips, Clem. This forum is like owning every coin and paper money book there is. There's very little you can't find out here.

I read something are web notes, which I always look for. I've never found any of those, but I've looked at a lot of the little numbers on the back (plate numbers?), which makes me wonder, do they have any value? I saved one that had the number 2, because it was low. I was gonna spend it, but I wanted to make sure it had no value first. I really don't think it does, but if it does, I'd sell that stupid thing...

if it has a back plate number, it is not a star. here is a website that compares a web note to a normal note.

No, I meant just a normal note. Does the plate number affect the value of a normal note in any way?

Nice link, though! Thanks for the info.
