Edward I was also known as Long shanks. He was known as an effective king, a chief adversary of the Scots, and for persecuting the Jewish population. He also built a large number of castles. I saw this pop up on H. Berk's site as part of the new bid or buy sale. I love the portrait. Here is a version of what he looked like (image from the bbc website) Here is my coin. I really liked the portrait on this one so I grabbed it. this the latest addition to my historical figures collection. Feel free to pile on with any English Kings or any other hammered coins. Wow, a superb coin from a very important English king. You hit a home run with that coin. It's a shame though that Mel Gibson with that horribly inaccurate Braveheart movie (which has almost no basis in reality) had such a negative impact in the way people today see one of medieval England's greatest Kings. I greatly admire Edward Longshanks. What a great coin! I showed this coin earlier, but I'll post it again as it's my only English coin...Henry III.
That is a well done portrait. I need to get busy and photograph more of my medieval coins but here is an Longshanks penny from Irland minted at Waterford.
Great coin and write- up @Orfew @Sallent I see you purchased from Antony Wilson at York Coins. He is the one I blame for my English hammered addiction.
