Well, everyone's responses to this certainly turned it into quite the "eyecandy" thread, didn't they?

This was not a difficult choice for me to make at all.

(It has of course been posted many times before, so apologies for the rerun.)

Though it's quite a small coin, this is one of my top favorites. Many thanks to @AncientJoe for having given me such a good deal on it a few years ago.

Ancient Greece (Kingdom of Macedon), silver "Mercenaries" drachm of King Perseus, ca. 175-170 BC

    Reverse: rose, bud right.

2.54 g. NGC Choice Mint State (Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5), cert. #4166130-001. Ex-Colosseo Collection, March, 2014. Prior provenance to Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., Buy or Bid Sale #186, Lot 90, with description"Ex-Philip Davis Collection. Some iridescent toning. Choice Mint State."

A brief bit of history: "Although the attribution of this issue has been debated, it seems likely that it was struck by Perseus to pay Cretan mercenaries, who would have been familiar with Rhodian issues, in the Third Macedonian War against the Romans (see R. Ashton, NC 1988, pp. 29-30)."

    Love that one.
Easily the nicest I've seen, great detail. Been and will remain on my want list.

Thanks, it has super nice surfaces that really make it attractive.

It was a Christmas present from my wife last year.

If you are a fan of lightly cleaned coins with plenty of original dirt and hoard patina still clinging to the coin, there you go: My Victoriatus.

Might not win a beauty contest, but I personally find the 2,200 year old dirt and deep dark toning aesthetically beautiful.
