I finished (as best I can) my recent collecting interest. It was Capped Bust Quarters/Reduced Size (1831-1838). I ended up with 34 of the 36 Browning varieties. So what's next? Capped Bust Dimes/Close Collar Strike (1828-1837). Of course I quickly noticed that the coins were essentially the same design as the CBQ's. But the set looks doable as long as I stick to a date set of Red Book listed varieties. Too many John Reich (JR) varieties to delve that deeply into the set. And I'll skip the 1829 Curl Base 2 variety; prohibitively expensive. That will leave me with 16 varieties to get. I'll try for XF coins but probably an occasional VF or AU will be included. I've got 3 so far. Here's the newest; it's an 1829 Large 10 (JR-2) in NGC XF-40:
Kanga I am sorry that we never met up at the Baltimore show .....that said I thinking if so I could of tweaked you next interest towards capped bust half dimes....... now you're talking a set that has lots of bang for the buck as well some sweet varieties .
Actually I started a Capped Bust Half Dime set 5-10 years ago. And I was doing it by LM varities. There's something on the order of 125 die marriages. I'm about half way but I'm taking ANY grade that identifiable so many are raw and would get a DETAILS grade. But it's been back burner for the last several years.
Hmmmm, my interest in Capped Bust Dimes/Close Collar Strike (1828-1837) is quickly sinking into the sunset. I find that the asking prices are higher than I think they should be. I'm investigating the silver and nickel 3-cent issues. OR I should step back and finish up a couple areas that I have a GOOD start on but have been sitting stagnant for several years. -- Early US Commemoratives -- Capped Bust Half Dimes From what I read the Early Commem market is depressed but you wouldn't believe that from the asking prices on eBay. I'll have to look at some of the auction sites.
I would love to start a Capped Bust, but when you are my age and budgeting everything it's difficult, but fun to watch others from the sideline.
