If you notice the marks on the back of the Athelred coin they are called peck marks. These were most likely used to pay tribute to the Viking raiders to keep them from attacking. The marks were probably made with knife tips by the Vikings to verify they were good silver. Athelred sent 10''s of thousands as tribute.
Wow that's just awesome. The history of these coins are so rich I love it. From what I know, during athelred's reign, the quality of silver in the coinage minted was top notch, which is another interest to collect one of these!
I've got this coin from Medieval Serbia. This is King Stefan Uros III Decanski (1321-1331). I love silver dinars with a sword.
Nice groat! (And others posted here.) Medieval English coins are fun. I personally dug this one up in England! That was an adrenaline rush.

For most of the Middle Ages English silver was of the highest quality and sought (as well as copied) by most of Europe, to the point where The fineness of the Sterling became standard. Nice coins everyone. My only English to this day, a Henry III. I hope to change that soon, as I'm looking to focus on medievals again for a while. It's been too long since I added a medieval coin to my collection.
Wow! Great coins you have there! I envy you for having the opportunity to be able to coin hunt in the U.K.! I've been wanting to do that for quite some time! Congrats!
Very cool! I didn't not know those in particular were subject to a mass of ancient counterfeitin! Interesting! Great coins you have there!
Awesome Henry you have there! Nice detailing on the coin. You should get back into medievals again, as I was into ancients and made the transfer not to long ago due to increase interest in the medieval history.

I have a few squirreled away, need to take images. I like to buttress the Byzantine collection with denars etc. with some Venetian, and Frankish issues from the Crusaders. Great stuff.

Great English medieval examples, coin-gang (it's always very cool seeing this medieval-side of our coin collections, eh?) Ummm sadly, I don't have any English examples, but I do have a handful of other medieval examples (am I allowed to show my non-English kids?) Yup, it's those snotty nosed kids from Lorraine ... => here are some examples ranging from 1303 through 1670 AD ... oh, and if those kids are allowed to mingle with your English rugrats, then I'm also inviting a few more of their melting-pot buddies ... Duke of Milan, Bernabo & Galeazzo II Visconti 1355-1378 AD ... and ... France, Henri IV Huitieme d'Ecu 1599 AD
Amazing collection! I too, will soon be collecting some French medievals! Especially the Lorraine with the Knight on Horseback and Sword! I really want this coin!!!!! What is the coin with the figure that's half off the coin holding the sword in the middle with Shield on the Backside? I haven't seen that one before!
