Perhaps someone should mention that the $17k one was a stater and the MFB was a 1/6. IMHO the MFB was a nicer coin but size does matter on these. The coin that caught my eye in that sale was lot 361 and went for $47.5k. Needless to say I did not bid. As far as I'm concerned, that was $7500 for the gold coin and $40k for the wart on the lion's head. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=334058 I was outbid on the junker (three digit) coins I wanted. That was quite a sale on several levels.
Yes, mine is only a 1/6 stater, I didn't intend to misrepresent! I'd prefer the forepart of man-faced bull even if 1/6th but I'm still very happy. Incidentally, a 1/12 stater of the same type as mine sold for a bit more than mine in a recent Heritage sale, so I am ok with the price overall. I will definitely get the screenshot when I get around to buying the big guy some day!
That electrum man-faced bull is lovely! I recently acquired a rare man-faced bull accidentally. I found this piece, unattributed (!), at Don Zauche's table at last month's Whitman expo. I collect Perseus and thought I had stumbled upon an unpublished type. Sicily, Alontion. circa 241-210 BC. AE19 6.39g Male (?) head left wearing Phrygian helmet (Perseus or Roma?) Man-headed bull standing left I was finally able to attribute it today after many failed attempts. I had not expected a man-headed bull and thought the reverse was more likely a horse than a bull! The catalogs all describe the obverse as "Male head left wearing Phrygian helmet." I still suspect Perseus, or possibly Roma, is depicted. After seeing a few examples with clear reverses I now desire an example with water flowing from the mouth of the man-faced-bull.
That is a great, and important, coin. The obverse probably features Patron Turio and the reverse, Acheloios Chydas. Here attached is the Potamikon section on Alontion. I had to white-out an error in note 48.
Great new MFB Nicholas! Will your next book include Electrum and Gold in addition to Silver? There are so many interesting MFBs in Silver but I had no idea they came in Electrum and Gold. John
Yes. Potamikon II will feature silver and gold from Italy and Sicily. The main text will consider Acheloios/early MFB and his companions (mother-bird goddess, nymphs, Nike, etc.) Potamikon III will feature silver and gold (and electrum) from Akarnania, Asia Minor, and all remaining mints. We aren't announcing what that text will be about, but it will be revolutionary! Thank you for asking! Nick
So it turns out gold ancient coins are as awesome as other ancient coins with the added bonus of being gold! I might have been bit by the gold bug. This guy is amazing to behold in hand:
