But, even if the value is only $100, and they are severely overgraded, deals like that just don't happen, not from dealers anyway. A coin or two worth more than 10 cents could slip in there, but 3 rare coins? My guess is that he will soon 'get tired' of the coins, and offer them up here for sale. I can't be sure, and maybe he really is just one really lucky guy, but it seems a little off...
In total aggreement verbatim on this one. The list of coins found sounds like the lists we discuss on Lincolns that many of us think are going to really go up in value. I just bought an XF 11-S and it ran me $67. My 14-D in ANACS F15 was a steal at $225. I'm inclined to believe that most dealers are well aware of this possibility. As a matter of fact the dealer I bought the 11-S agrees wholeheartedly and I've known him for at least 15 years. IF these coins DID come out of cup of 300 or so wheats the dealer needs to close his doors. He's in the wrong business.
Betcha the infraction arose from the way hamman88 worded his comment, not the fact that it expressed the same skepticism that I have, along with others who've posted here.
Well, you guys do have to keep in mind that i live in a very small town with next to no collectors. My dealer is a slab hound dealing almost exclusively uncirculated. He pays nothing for the wheaties and just dumps them into the bin. However, I suppose I will refrain from posting anymore good finds until I can get a camera. Though, I am curious. What exactly do I stand to gain by lying? Perhaps it is common practice that I just somehow missed for one to come onto a coin forum and brag about coins they don't have???? Though, I can't figure out WHY someone would do it unless they were possibly trying to sell said coins. Of course, then again....maybe I really am lying because I need the love and adoration???? hehe. Sorry, had to work in the smart aleck remark. It's all good though, I don't really need you to believe me. I was simply trying to share in my excitement with the forum. I'll refrain from that from now on until I can get a camera and provide you guys with "proof". Though, just as a side note. I would have went the 55' DDO route myself If I were going to lie. Jasn
No one is accusing you of lying, just of being mistaken in your attributions. It's not the same thing Jasn.
Do you have a friend, neighbor, family member with a camera or scanner. I would like to see that 1914-D!
When you take your pictures, could we get you to include a certification from a notary public ? Just ribbin' ya ! Nice finds. I can't wait to see the pics.
Haha....no problem. But does it count if it's my signature seeing as I'm a notary? Hahahaa...then again, perhaps I'm just be deceptive again.
What do you guys use to take your pics that looks like 30x, or around there, magnification with the pics still being almost crystal clear. Is it a m'scope or a camera? You guys that know what I'm talking about, do you know what type of camera is used and the price of the camera? To answer the question about a friend with a camera. I have a buddy that's got a 6 megapixel canon rebel (i think it's the rebel) and he's also got a camera phone. Problem is, he always forget his canon when he comes to town. However, he's NEVER without his phone. If I can get him to stop by....I'll try to get a couple of pics. Jasn
My pictures are not the best, but my camera is a 3X lens with a 3X digital zoom, 2 meg Olympus. BTW, I only use about 1.5X on the digital. Otherwise, I only get part of the picture. Several of the people only use a scanner. You will find several threads on picking/using a camera on this sight and in the reference section. The only real requirement I know is a macro setting and all, or at least nearly all, of the point and shoot cameras today have it. However, my daughter has a Conon Rebel. It has a macro setting, but you must buy a lens to use it. I take sharper pictures with my cheapy than I can with hers, but her colors are better.
Well, I apologize for having doubted you. Let me say then, congratulations on that haul. I suggest you return as soon as possible and grab some more. Around here, there aren't dealers inept enough to not look through the wheats. I would buy them when I can. If he really doesn't search them, a '55 DDO is very possible.
1911s 1914d can any of you tell if the D is altered? are there any telltale signs I could look for with my magnifier?
The 11-S is too blurry to tell, but the 14-D looks legit, but for some reason the mint mark on it is bugging me.
Your pictures are not clear enough for me to make out everything, but I am reasonably sure that is not a 1944-D due to the spacing between the 9 and the one. The positive proof that it is a 1944-D is if there is a VDB (however faint) on the base of the bust, but I doubt the lack of it proves that it is a 1914. It could have been removed. If you look at the picture of the 1944D (from Heritage), the arrow points at the VDB, but it is hard to make out. You can also see that if the arm of the 4 is removed, the spacing is not the same as you coin. As for the "D", I cannot tell. It is in a funny position, but the first one I pulled up on Heritage was in a similar position.
Edited: No offers to trade allowed in this forum hahahahah sorry, I just couldn't resist (if you don't get it....check back a few posts and you'll see what I mean) thanx for the input guys...I see no vdb on the coin...but then again....most of them have no truly visable vdb......seems either really weakly struck on most or just rubbed off from normal wear. the 24d is in Edited: foul language poor shape for whomever mentioned the condition earlier. Looks like a "lucky" coin for someone who rubbed it wayyyyy too much. Fine with me though as it still fills it's spot in my book. As a note for those making the statements about their dealers. As I said, this guy only really handles PCGS/NGC slabbed coins and he is a nut about toned morgans. I have witnessed him buy a few rolls of wheaties when I was in there and he opens them and does the quick scan and dumps them in his box. I have also received probably 40 memorial cents and a couple of canadian from my purchases. I honestly just don't think he cares at all about the lincolns as he has 0 slabbed lincolns in his shop. Though, he has some AWESOME walkers.......Edited: foul language hahaha Jasn
The mintmark looks a bit off to me as well. It looks a bit out of position and rotated a couple of degrees. of course, I have many very common date lincolns that look the same. Who should I send it to to get it authenticated (and possibly) slabbed? I have never dealt with any grading services....so any recommendation would be appreciated. NOTE: I do know from reading here that SGS is a bad choice....though it may come back MS-68 or better hahaha Jasn
I think what he said at the top of the page was a joke... But at any rate, the 24D might be so worn because of the value of coins back in the roaring 20's, not to mention that this coin probably circulated during the great depression. If you notice, most coins from the 1800s-1850s are very well worn. In the 50 years a penny would be in circulation in the 1900's, it would get a lot more use than a coin from 1957 would. These days, we all get home and throw our pennies in a big jug and forget about them until it overflows, but it was a much different thing when a penny could buy you a loaf of bread.
