No, but I Clio'd someone else

(not really a big Clio, just a one-increment last-second bid which won.)

I considered many of the Roman Egypt tets but ended up bidding on a big Greek instead, something which had been on my wishlist a long time and this one called out

Someone sniped a nice Syracuse Pyrrhos AE Litra I had my eye and wallet on. Nothing makes an early morning meeting worse than getting out of it and learning you lost your auction. Still, nothing a few cold beers and a Caps victory over Pittsburgh can't heal.

 

I had my eye on that Syracuse Pyrrhos AE Litra as well. But, decided to focus on other lots. That is a really nice one though. I did get Clio'd and AA'd (?) on several of the Roman Egyptian tets , but did manage to snag a few like this one:

You got yours for a lot less than I got my lesser one but mine came with 26 others so I guess that explains that. Your coin does not have the standard obverse legend as listed in Emmett and as shown on mine. Significant?

 

I Clio'd someone yesterday on Agora Auctions to get my new Hadrian denarius. I bid on it with 2 seconds left.

The other guy was going to have it for the $45 opening bid, and I couldn't permit that to happen. Hammered for $61, my Max bid was $62. Talk about luck at the last second.

I hope it wasn't one of you who got Clio'd by me, though I didn't recognize the bidder's handle.

Didn't get to any bidding. For a odd but funny reason I was having some issues & wasn't able to make any purchases, was yesterday afternoon before I got issue resolved. I saved a lot of money that way but I missed out on some cool coins.

 

I'm glad you didn't Clio me...that would have made us coin rivals and we would be feuding like the Hatfields and McCoys over them coins.

 

Clio can be defeated but it is hard and you definitely have to pay the price. I'd be doing the exact same thing if I were him. At some point he's going to have accumulated one of the most diverse collections ever known, containing a lot of good quality stuff.

 

Someone hasn't been Clio'd yet.

It will happen to everyone who buys at auction eventually. He is a collector with a lot of money that wins a lot of coins. "Clio" is the bidder handle.

 

Clio will swoop in at the last minute at an auction and buy up all the Roman Republic denarii, or all the Roman provincials, or all the Greeks (whatever he is in a mood for at that time). He doesn't just buy 2 or 3 coins, he'll bid up an entire category at a time at auction and win all the coins for himself, leaving dozens of victims in his wake.

Good for you for never being Clio'd. I hope you continue to have such luck.

 

Well... that's not quite true

He does have categories of higher interest and I've never seen him buy all coins in entire categories. There is method to the madness. I've stalked studied his purchases from time to time by going through entire auctions before the winning bidder names disappear (CNG, Roma). He's just an avid collector with broad interests and enough money to bring home the bacon.

 

Clio buys everything... coins, tokens, medals, ancients, US, medieval etc.... auctions, fixed price, direct offers, collections, single coins... and he buys from everyone and he sometimes has other dealers representing him so you don't know your bidding against him. He is a nice guy though and if you know him and you really want something for your collection he will defer to you, as long as your willing to return the favor at some point. I've been clio'd a lot, 13 times in one auction, only 3 times today.
