I went to pu this quarter in the vending machine last night and noticed it felt different. After a closer look this is what I found. If you look close, you can see the ridge is messed up. Also, it apears the letter for the mint is messed up. Is it worth more then $.25? It's in pretty bad shape. Thanks, B.
I can't tell from the photos you posted. What is the date and mint mark on it? And post better pictures if you can.
If you click on the photo it gets a lot bigger. The date is 1982 and the mint looks like it could be a P.
Try these: http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j196/99acr/P8280426_edited-copy-2.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j196/99acr/P8280426_edited-copy-3.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j196/99acr/P8280426_edited-copy-1.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j196/99acr/P8280426_edited-copy.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j196/99acr/P8280426_edited.jpg You can see that the letters and date are to close to the edge compared to the other quarter. The big line from his nose to the neck is a hair.
Thanks for the better pictures. That does look strange. But I don't know anything about errors. I'm sure someone else will be along to help you soon. P.S. It kinda looks like post-mint damage, at least to my untrained eye.
My first reaction too, but that doesn't explain The enlarged bust with a narrowed space between the neck and the date, or The doubled rim extending about 1/3 of the circumference from "BE" in "LIBERTY" to the vicinity of the mintmark.
I'd say it got the hammered between two pieces of leather treatment, followed by having the rim spooned back down.
I remember seeing a lot of those stepped-edge quarters years ago. Maybe if you post this in the error section you will get some feedback (I don't think it is an error, but they will tell you why).
I would say that the quarter has a heavy collar clash. What happened is that the die was damaged by striking the interior edge of the collar and the edge of the collar was transfered to the die. So when the quarter was struck 2 edges will show on the coin. Lou
Lou, Would a collar clash make the bust seem so much larger, and heavier? I almost think it's a counterfeit, but what do I know?
