Haven't been posting as much lately and I'm falling behind in cataloging my coins and all. I've always liked Byzantine coins since I picked up my first one, over the past few months I managed to get into overstrikes. I guess its either the 2-in-1, history, or you can even call it recycled coins aspect that appeals to me. Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine Anonymous Follis: Time of Nicephorus III Constantine X Feel free to share anything.
solid byzantine coins IR! here's a overstruck heraclius (on a right facing bust follis of some type) with a ragged flan...
Newly question. I bought a bag of Byzantines to start getting familiar with the coins and designs. While most of the coins are heavily worn, there are definitely a few that are struck multiple times or overstruck or other similar situations. My questions is, are over strikes/multiple strikes common with Byzantine coins? Are they simply restriking the new guy/gal over the old guy/gal, so to speak?
Very cool. I've also got one of the two Heracli, got to pull it out. I'll try to share a photo today.
Here's another one. It appears to be Christ on the obverse (though it could be an emperor) and a cross on steps on the reverse. Near as I can tell, it's from the eleventh century.
For good measure, I'll also add a 40 nummi piece of Justinian. It has a powdery green patina. Obverse: facing bust of emperor, Reverse: large M with two stars on the right and the legend CON. That's it.
Thanks for pointing this out @David@PCC - When I was attributing this coin last year (came in an unclean hoard of unidentified coins) I debated whether it was Justinian or Maurice as it was hard to tell from wildwinds and obviously, the lack of a readable legend on the obverse. Thanks for squaring it up for me. Maurice - the emperor affiliated with the strategikon - very cool. I actually have a few other Justinians - half folles.
Here's a coin of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, half follis. Two emperors standing on the obverse, large "K" and ANNO on the reverse. Condition isn't too good but I was still able to attribute it. It came from an uncleaned hoard I purchased in 2016.
ancient coin hunter => you rock (I love that you're pounding-out some awesome coin-photos) Just a suggestion ... you may want to crop those babies so they just show the "coin itself" => again, I'm thrilled that you're showing-off your stuff (very cool)
Oh, and I happen to have a couple of pretty cool Byzy-overstrikes ... => wanna see 'em? (again) Heraclius was a fricken Thug!! (he pounded his face on everything!!) Heraclius stamped over Anastasius Heraclius stamped over Justin-I ... pretty cool, eh?
