You're right. It's a luxury to sit on a collection and wait for the right seller's price to show up.

Yes indeed, a luxury, and just maybe a lifestyle.

    Apple's IPO price (in 1980): $22/share.

Apple's closing price today: $148.95/share. Almost a sevenfold increase.

Oops -- that doesn't count splits.

After splits, Apple's adjusted IPO price is thirty-nine cents a share. That makes, umm, a 382-fold increase.

Oops -- that doesn't count dividend payments...

So, if you'd passed on that gold sovereign in 1972, tucked the $15 under your mattress, scraped together another $7 over the next eight years, and then bought one share of Apple, it would now be worth around $8400. Plus you'd have gotten another $600 or so in dividend payments (initiated in 2012). Today, the dividend on 56 (2x2x2x7) shares of Apple stock amounts to $141.12/yr. That'll be going up this quarter.

(Disclaimer: putting all your marbles in one stock is still a stupid way to invest. Unless, as Kurt suggested, you or your advisor are a time traveler.)

And naturally you did all of that and are so rich that you don't have to toil any longer.

And Warren Buffett announced today he has been quietly selling IBM, after announcing a few weeks ago he has been buying Apple.

Naturally. I bought Apple when it was $16, several splits ago -- and sold it at $33, doubling my money, right before it took off. (I did buy back in eventually.)

I'm not the kind of stupid or lucky to put all my eggs in that one basket, or any other. And no time travelers have hooked me up, at least not yet (whatever that means in the context of time travel).

There is no point in arguing with those who dismiss investing as rigged and insider and slice those who do make money -- a lot of money -- through decades of discipline.

Not nessasarily, if you don't have to sell, then 410$ is good money. No, matter how long the hold was.

just saying that I don't just buy for my collection, I buy some just to hold on to.
Why not if you can afford for the market to come to you.

Apple made a lot of $ for me. Sold it recently. Great stock and company! :)

I was thinking of adding more but the company didn't have its usual post-earnings pullback.

pulled back a few dollars for a short time but has rebounded nicely. New I-phone coming and dividend raise helps plus the repatriation of overseas money possibilities

there will be more chances to buy it again when Wall street big boys decide it has gone up enough and start shorting it aggressively.
