Hey guys, I just wanted to post this, because I feel like it could give a lot of people ideas on things. And I know because you guys collect that you love to show and tell. Please take pictures of your collection, post videos, tell us about your collection. Tell us how you aquired your collection. Tell us why you collect it. Make this thread the information bombardment. Wheat collection welcome, copper hoarders, errors, your favorites, world coins, paper money, toned coins, etc. whatever you want to show us, at least I will be happy to read because I feel like there are still somethings I could be learning about, and might not ever learn about it unless someone tells me. And I also just love looking at coins. Thank you for your time. Me personally I love coins with holes in them because I get to wear them. Plus I think that's how coins should be because then we could string them up, and have all your coins come out your pocket at once and have them organized. I would collect hobo nickels but I haven't found anyone who does em. I collect wheat pennies, foreign coins, I would collect errors if I could find any haha but I always seem to find pre mint damage or errors that are too minor. I have a few die chip coins and struck through grease. But they aren't that great. I collect anything from 2009 that I find due to low mintage. I collect nice looking older coins. Love to weigh every single penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Love silver coins. Love looking for small date large date series in 1982, 70s, and 60s. Love the S mint mark. Got one 2017 P penny but I liked that they didn't put it on the penny. But that would leave only one letter on our coins because sanfran doesn't even strike business strike coins. :/ hoping they will again. Anyways. Thanks for reading and if you post on my forum, thanks for taking the time. Lemme see your wheatiesssss haha I will try my best to reply when I can.

I collect mostly gold (AGE) and silver (ASE) with a little platinum (APE), but only US coins. I like everything from cents to 5 oz pucks, from proof sets to mint sets (the first pics is my latest acquisition). I do have one Canadian coin and as luck has it, it has a hole in it (it was a gift, I would never buy a coin with the Royal Hag on it).

Oh my gosh that Canada coin is so cool. I also happen to love dragons so that's impressive lol. Never knew Canada had those kinda coins too so that's new to me haha. Are those kinda coins in circulation too or just proof type coin?

I'm almost exclusively exonumia at this point, with the bulk of my collection being Civil War tokens.

The bulk of my collection is military monies. Military trade tokens are the vast majority and I have hundreds of them. I specialize in Air Force tokens because I'm active duty Air Force and I feel that these tokens are part of my heritage. Here's a group scan of several types of military monies.

    From the top down:
The Military Payment Certificate was issued to U.S. troops stationed overseas in an effort to cut down on black market activities as well as to try and insulate local economies from the more valuable dollar.

Below are a collection of military trade tokens. These were used in the clubs as a way to extend credit and in vending/slot machines. When I took that scan I was trying to highlight the different denominations that were available but generally they would indicate which base they were used at and which club - Enlisted, Airman's, NCO, Officer. Here's a typical example:

Below that is a chit book and below are detached chits. That chit book you see in the above scan was from somewhere between 1917-1922 and is possible to get an approximation on the date because of the names of government officials on the reverse. These were used in similar ways to the tokens. You'll also find detached ones with holes punched in them - those were redeemed.

Below that is an AAFES POG. The obverse of POGS feature a military theme and the reverse depicts the denomiation. These are a product of the most recent war with Iraq and were printed from 2003 to 2011. The POGs are printed on styrene and come in 5, 10, and 25 cent values. The POGs were used by the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) as change in cash transactions because it's cheaper to get them to the overseas locations than actual coinage. They are still in use and are probably the last example of military money as they issue what's called an Eagle Card now. It looks like a debit card that is linked to your checking account that you load money on. I wish I knew what happened to mine...

With the exception of the POGs, everything comes from eBay or my coin friends who score things for me from coin shows. (Thanks @BRandM and @John Anthony !)

Now my other passion, Ancients! I lack focus here. I like Greek, Roman, and non-classical cultures. Here's a digital tray:

    12 tray.jpg

Most of those are Roman or Roman provincial but there are a couple Seleucid, a Carthaginian, and Greek. Below is a Numidian:

Kings of Numidia, Micipsa, c. 148-118 BC
    Æ26, 12.9g, 12h; Numidian mint.
Obv.: Laureate head of king left.
Rev.: Horse galloping left, pellet below.

About 95% of my ancients come from private sales but I've also purchased from FORVM Ancient Coins, Civitas Galleries, and Shick Coins (I think).

Wow that's an awesome read. So they have a black market working within the military is that what the tokens are supposed to prevent sales for? And there was not a picture of the chit book unless that's talking about the ram type coins. But that's pretty cool, I hope to see one day an anchient coin like that in my hands haha I think I have been to Forbes Air Force base, my grandpa was in the military and he brought me to a lot of military bases on the way to New Hampshire. That's pretty cool though thanks for the post

    Thanks!

Well servicemen were somehow exchanging local currency for dollars and the government had a huge overdraft - more money was going out than coming in. Also, with a war torn country the U.S. dollar would wreck havoc on a local economy and cause inflation.

The chit book is that thing called "Smileage Book" and the little rectangles below are examples of what the paper chits looked like.

Those "good for" tokes were used a lot in the U.S. back in the day not just at military installations. Pool halls, grocery stores, retail stores, bars, etc. They allowed the store to extend credit and act as a sort of gift card.

Glad you thought my stuff was interesting. If you like history, don't be afraid to check out the Ancients sub-forum. Lots of good people and interesting posts.

I don't think it's for circulation, I got it from my girlfriend (that's why I haven't got rid of it yet), I don't even know where she got it (probably ebay).
