yes, for the war effort (WWI) Recoined during the 1920's as required by law. That is why there were so many early Peace dollars.
It's hard to separate the concepts of desirability and beauty as regards a coin. How desirable is an ugly coin? It needs a lot of compensating qualities. King of Coins is a broad assertion of superiority given all factors. I don't think a coin which is clearly king should require caveats. If the coin isn't in the top echelon of design, how can it be king? The Lincoln cent design is not only rather boring, but why not also dock its score for being relatively small and a lesser metal? Or that it's been produced for an excessively long period, to the detriment of what possible replacement's arrival? For people who find the subject President to be a major asset, how is the Lincoln Commemorative not superior? It's like a cent with some of a Morgan's better qualities hybridized into it. The Morgan has the brute forces of size, silver, and an earlier style that could be considered more evocative of the history which coins embody. But again, not a design which wildly outshines other US coins. Much of its historical basis is what, silver mining companies' lobbying? It also suffers a perhaps unfair susceptibility to being the focus of hucksters out to BS their possible value to newbies. I'm not here to crown a king myself nor teach a class on how to like what I like. But I'll play devil's advocate against these pretenders to the throne.
When I say king of coins, what I mean is as far as collector popularity, permeation in the hobby, and number of collectors. I'm not declaring the design the king of coins, just the impact the series has had on the hobby as a whole.
My last two cents on the subject ( pun intended). When someone asks about the king of coins, I have always replied that the Morgan dollar is the King of Eagles. It is truly a regal coin. But to answer your question: What is the king of coins, the Lincoln cent or Morgan dollar. I would say neither. The king of U.S. coins belongs to the design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Geeez - why is that somebody is always telling my secrets And BTW, I never needed much of anything to impress a stripper
And that is why I voted for the Morgan dollar. Although I only collect them if I see something that really attracts me, or the price is too good to turn down.
Cents in general and the Lincoln Penny in particular. There's something very, very worthy about the cent!
How do you figure? Presently there are 6185 state quarters listed on eBay. However, there are 7707 Lincoln wheats plus 1935 memorials and drum roll........... 13324 Morgan dollars. Incidentally, that is the same order I found the last time I did the totals both on eBay and Heritage.
